Franklin-Simpson vs. Johnson Central Updates - 4A State Championship Game

They have kicked it onside almost all year and almost every time in this game as well. Ever since Belfry returned the 2nd half KO for a TD its been squib or onside every time. Dont know why any team would expect anything else if they have watched tape.

Not a fan of the onside kick up 36-0! Karma haunts down the road...

Not really an onside kick. JC has been using the diagonal squib most of the year. JC attempting to put it deep and it hurt them dearly in the game against Belfry. The ball traveled down the field a good 25 yes, the FS player simply stepped back instead of stepping into the ball

Matney is a complete jerk.

He is not liked by many at all outside of JC.

He runs the score up on a lot of teams and hopefully one day he gets paid back.

I'm not talking about a running clock, he tries to add to it and humiliate the other team.

It's a Mattney thing. I used to hate it as well when he did similar things in the past. But to be honest, I've come to respect it as well as expect it. When he see's blood, he goes for the kill. He does coach with a chip on his shoulder IMO, but I really don't think he does things out of disrespect for the opponent.

Some of those onsides are also 20 yard squib kicks as well. He hates to allow a return by the other team.

Maybe not, but he is absolutely loved by his players and community and if he came to coach for your program you would feel the same way. Hate all you want, but the man wins and wins and wins.

I've seen the opposite of running the score up this year. JC hasn't scored all that many 2nd half points this year.

JC also did the squib kick numerous times against Lex. Cath and that turned the momentum of that game big time.

Is Matney the only coach in the finals that has been suspended by the KHSAA?

This is exactly right. When you get an early running clock it keeps the final margin down, especially with a team like Johnson Central that runs the ball so much. JC had running clocks against both Ashland and Wayne County early in the second quarter and only scored two more times in each of those games.

I've noticed that as well. He does things that people don't like, but the more I've learned and thought on it, I don't think he's doing it out of disrespect for any particular team, he does it to win ball games and help kids set records. The man knows football and also knows that a lot of people around the state don't like him, but he still does what he thinks is best for his kids whether anyone else likes it or not. I have a similar philosophy as to not caring what people think as long as I know I'm doing the right thing, which has led to me liking his coaching style more and more.

Why?

It's a little league passing game.

Is Matney the only coach in the finals that has been suspended by the KHSAA?

Most likely, what was he suspended for?

Well said. He has always been about his kids first and taken the brunt of all criticism on their behalf.
