Listed at 6'2 but is probably 6'1 if you cut his hair. His wingspan I think is a big concern.

Much respect to Corbin, they are a very good football team and they could easily have won this game. They came in with a great game plan and they executed it well. They just couldn't maintain it for 4 quarters against Belfry's front lines. The Redhounds moved the chains consistently in the first half, and they kept Belfry's offense off the field.

 

Some crazy stat lines.

 

Belfry scored 42 points and only had about 3 first downs. I think the Pirates ran 3 plays in the first quarter, and I would guess less than 10 plays in the first half. I think I heard they ran only 26 plays on the night.

 

Belfry made some adjustments in the second half that were noticeable. Corbin was playing with a down lineman in every gap and they would shift just prior to every play. It was almost like they knew what play was coming. Belfry moved their tight end out a few yards and their wing back off the tackle. They also started going from a huddle instead of signaling in plays at the line of scrimmage. Both paid dividends. They used the new alignment, and Corbin's overpursuit to burn the Redhounds on the counter and option.

I want to know if @Watusi was sweating any on this cool evening?

I was OK for the most part but I did eventually reach the point where I thought it was probably not going to end well. We went into the locker room at the half down 17-7 and were slated to receive the 2nd half kickoff. Belfry's staff is tremendous at making halftime adjustments and I felt they would come out ready because I have become accustomed to it.

 

When Corbin continued outplaying Belfry in the 3rd, I got a little anxious. When they drove down inside the 5 with about 3 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, I knew that another score might seal the deal. 24-7 looked like a mountain Belfry couldn't climb and I thought it was over.

 

Then the biggest play of the night happened, a bad snap that Belfry recovered. Then Hunter busted out with a long TD and the 3rd quarter ended 17-14 and that really fueled the Pirates. You could see the spring in their step.

 

It was all Belfry from there. Belfry got the ball back with about 9 min to go in the 4th and I was just hoping they would use up the clock and score at the end to win it. Instead they broke several long runs, created some takeaways, and scored 4 more times.

What did you think of the atmosphere, the comeback, the coaching, and the way it all panned out?

That 4th Down play was huge

 

I honestly think if Corbin just takes 3 that might have potentially changed the course of the game. Sure 3 points doesn't matter with the Final Score the way it turned out, but that doesn't tell the whole story.

 

To that point most of the bounces were going Corbin's way. Fumbles rolling OOB, no calls on border line Offensive PI, Belfry had lost a fumble, a tipped pass caught for a big gain, near INTs missed by Belfry including an easy Pick 6.

 

Had they kicked the FG it is 20-7 and the momentum remains with Corbin and Belfry is in comeback mode needing two TDs. In addition Corbin used two timeouts inside the 10.

 

That fumble gave Belfry a lucky bounce and gave them momentum. Then Hunter goes Walter Payton and suddenly the entire game had shifted. It was almost as if you could see Corbin think to themselves "why are we not able to put them away?!?! Did they take our best shot?!!!" Then everything tightened up for Corbin and Belfry's D started to dominate the LOS and Big Bang Boom Belfry is kneeling it with their 2nd string inside the 10

That play and the decision to go for it were huge. When Corbin botched the snap and failed to score, the wind seemed to go out of the sails of the entire Corbin sideline. I agreed with the decision to forego the FG because the 3 pts. only gives you a 13 point lead and you don't know if you will get that close again with just a quarter to go. I would have taken my chances with Sizemore running it straight at them, but if the Redhounds would have executed the play,(appeared to me that it was going to be a direct snap to Estep who would have thrown it to an open Sizemore) then I would have thought the call was brilliant.

 

I believe that if Corbin kicked the FG, then the score more than likely would have ended up 21-20 in favor of the Pirates. Corbin had to play with more emotion than Belfry to get the win, maybe a FG would have subsided the momentum change, but who knows. I can't find fault in the coaching staff for taking that gamble though because Belfry was going to score a couple of more times regardless.

Well @ALTCat, for it to be that packed of a house before 6pm was unbelievable. Belfry's band had to stand beside the bleacher and we were in front of them. It was 2 deep or more if you were standing. We talked to some guys from Pikeville, Whitley City and Bell Co. They came from everywhere to see this game and the crowd was great.

 

As for the comeback, I was impressed with how Belfry never seem to be shocked that they were down by 17. I give Corbin the credit, they came out ready to play and took it to Belfry. Belfry just took it stride and keep to their game play and just ate away at Corbin's lead. Corbin seemed to get a little tired towards the end of the 3rd QT. After Belfry's scored the second TD, it seemed to take the wind out of Corbin.

 

Really impressed with the coaching coming from Belfry, plus the coaching from Corbin. But Belfry's coaches just kept calm and stuck with what got them this far.
