Getting updates through Twitter, it sounded like typical X/T game. X scored early, but couldn't do much to slow down T's offense. X scored late to make it closer than it was. Don't know if X scores on those two posssessions they turned it over, but bottom line is you can't give T extra possessions.

Any update on Ridder's condition? I hope the knee injury is not serious.

I was concerned until the final pick.

Does anyone know what the equipment violation penalty that took an important first down away from Trinity consisted of? Mouth piece? I thought the refs did a good job all in all. I believe they were a northern Kentucky crew. Had about 4 face mask penalties - total on both teams - in first half. Can't remember any after that.

With the exception of his runs on the first drive, Ridder didn't have a memorable game. Two costly turnovers in the first half killed any chance for St X. Albers played well , but couldn't get it done thru the air.

As I recall the play was a quick slant over the middle. The people I was with initiially thought the call was ineligible man downfield, as you say, but we couldn't see how a lineman could get downfield that quickly to cause a foul. Maybe the man downfield was another "receiver" who was covered up and thus ineligible.

I think they are vulnerable to a very strong passing game. I think it is harder to do than that sounds. Look at the first X interception. Ridder was being chased and throwing off balance. To have a strong passing game the team will have to protect the quarterback. That is the problem. If I were scouting Trinity, I would forget runs up the middle, there is nothing there. Designed runs to the outside are also very tough. A run/pass option wide is possible with a quarterback like Ridder, but the problem is stringing together seven or eight plays to get a drive. The other very real problem is that most teams will need to score on almost every possession if they plan to beat Trinity, because Trinity will score on most possessions. I thought the Trinity QB was a little hard on himself in the paper, but there were a few drives stopped by self inflicted wounds. It is tough to count on that. In short, if I am scouting Trinity, I'd start with a couple of Tylenol and a couple of shots of Jim Beam. Then I'd pull out every trick play, fake punt and onside kick I could think of and hope for the best.

Any Trinity fans know if Barron Hoffman will be suiting up for the finals? I'm sure it would be hard to work into the rotation at this point in the season. I've known the family for years and I know they were really devastated with the preseason injury he had. He worked hard for three plus years to finally earn a starting spot but it was not to be

2 words...work ethic

 

I know other schools work hard but I sincerely believe that no other school puts in the time getting ready for a season that Trinity does.

 

Everyone connected with the program from coaches to players to managers puts in a incredible amount of time to get ready for a 15 game season.

 

The coaches are masters of preparation, they leave no detail to chance. God only knows how many hours they spend watching film.

 

The players have to buy into it. Starting with winter and spring workouts the kids put in 3-4 hours a day 4 days a week. Once school is out and the summer program starts the kids put in 4-6 hours a day, 4 days a week every week other then dead period. Then once the season "starts" the intensity level gets ratcheted up. There may be other programs that have as extensive an off season program as Trinity but I don't know of any.

I've known some of the assistant coaches over the years and have developed a theory. First, it is a lot of hard work. Second, the assistant coaches are very good. I don't know if there is a better OC in high school ball anywhere than Andrew Coverdale. Perhaps the most important factor is that Coach Beatty is able to convince teenage boys and middle aged coaches to put in all of that work. His ability as a long term motivator, as opposed to a rah, rah up for the big game motivator may be the biggest factor. With all of the success, a lot of very good ball players now want to come to Trinity. Obviously that helps, but he has beaten more talented teams. There is also the support of the school administration and the entire school family. That is also a big deal. Over the past fifty years Trinity has been this states best program. Coach Beatty has made it even better.
