BREAKING: Dow closes above 19,000 for the first time ever as S&P 500 sees first close above 2,200 in history. Dow closes above 19,

I have zero knowledge of the stock markets.

What exactly does this mean? I know that them being up is good, and down bad, but other than that I'm clueless.

If you plan on ever retiring, I suggest you look into it.

I've been told the S & P is a better gauge since it has more companies.

Short story: A group of 30 stocks that are measured by their share price. The total of those stocks hit 19k yesterday.

Because it's only 30 stocks it's not really considered a great indicator of much.

Didn't realize it was only 30. Seems like it would be a terrible indicator. How many are in the S&P?

What do they use to get to the 19k? It's not their trading value/price.

Ive had a 401k for five years, so that will be my retirement.

Total market capitalization. Multiply all of the existing shares of each company by their respective share prices and add them all up.

Than you are probably invested in companies that make up the DOW

502...

500 companies and 2 have more than one form of common stock. I assume that's why it's the S&P 500.

If you know what you're doing the stock market can be a gold mine.

I'm clueless so I generally stay away, but man the money you can make...
