I'm not really a good one to ask though. College football season ends for me the second college basketball starts. IMO, it's far and away the least exciting "major" sport we have. With NFL in full swing and college ball starting, I'll be lucky to watch another college football game all year.

See I'm the other way around. College basketball is an afterthought until the super bowl is over. With the way the tournament is, just hope your team doesn't lose more than 10 games and you have nothing to worry about. It's not very exciting to me. I think college football is the most exciting major sport we have. Every game matters. Literally. College basketball doesn't mean anything until ~February. If UK loses to Michigan State Tuesday it doesn't mean anything. If Ohio State loses to Michigan State this weekend the season is over. Much more exciting.

I'm a huge NFL fan, but you're right. I watch my team religiously, but unless it's matchups like yesterday with Steelers/ Cowboys and NE/ Seattle it's pretty blah.

4 is absolutely the right number. There's no need to add teams.

 

Any system that excludes a team with a realistic chance to win the championship based on a single, very competitive loss in a very hostile environment is inadequate. To support that system, you require perfection over a 1/4 of the year (i.e., "if you wanted to be in the Top 4, win all of your games.") UofL could be in that situation.

 

I think you'd have a hard time arguing that the #9 team fits that description. I think it is much easier to find a #5 team fitting that description.

 

As to the extra week of games, that is a misnomer.

* The 4 losing teams play the 1st round game instead of a bowl game (finishing with 13 or 14 games depending on if they play Conf Champ game) just like 50 or so other FBS teams.

* The 2 losing teams in the 2nd round play same # of games all teams that start the season want to play (finishing with 14 or 15 games depending on if they play Conf Champ game - same as Bama, Clemson, Oregon & OSU played the past 2 yrs).

* Only the 2 teams in the Championship Game play any extra games - 1 extra game (finishing with 15 or 16 games depending on if they play Conf Champ game). In exchange for that BURDEN, they get the chance to play in the Championship Game and the $ that comes along with it.

* Additionally, if we maintain the charade that these players are "student athletes," these games are played when school is either OUT or just starting winter semester. Not exactly a burden on the "student athlete academics."

The more football the better to me. If your team makes the playoffs the month between your last game and the playoff is absolutely brutal.

It kills all momentum. The year ND played in the plus 1 against Alabama is a prime example. ND was a lucky team that was riding a wave of momentum. Alabama was a better team. Given a month to let the momentum due was like starting the season over again for ND, and Alabama ' s superior talent won out. It would have been way more interesting if they played 14 days after the last regular season, IMO.

That's why I like the 8 team playoff. Play the first round the 2nd weekend in December.

This is exactly what I haven been saying I wanted for years on here when talking about college football. They took a step in the right direction having 4, now take it one more and make it 8.

 

Guarntee the 5 conference champions make it. This way teams know for sure exactly what they have to do to make it, and so they can't really have an excuse if they don't get one of the 3 at larges because they should have won their conference championship to Guarntee it. Then you have 3 at large make it.

I have been saying the exact same thing for the last few years. Seems crazy to me that a team that wins a big 5 conference is going to be left out every year... and maybe 2 could be left out some years. By having the conference winners automatically qualify, EVERY team in the power 5 conferences has the opportunity to play for the national championship when the season starts...very simple...win your conference and you are in.

I'm just the opposite of you on the football choice. I too love college basketball, but I'll take a good rivalry or high level college football game over an NFL game any day of the week.
