I still would like to think it could never happen, but I'm less sure than I used to be. I could see a large portion of the population falling under the spell of a dynamic personality to the point where mass murder of "undesirables" would be accepted if it thought it was best for the country.

I think if you asked the majority of Trump supporters on this board, there is only one true undesireable, our next President.

I started to use "deplorables" but thought better of it.

Considering how stagnant Congress has been maybe it starts with a populist leader that calls for term limits then just uses executive action to make Congress inept and allows the Supreme Court to stay locked.

Please, just stop. Comparing any of our elected leaders to Hitler is just as ridiculous as ridiculous can be. The guy had millions of people killed. Even the Clintons cannot pull that off...

Now to be fair Hitler would appeal to some on the left with his animal friendly policies, his vegetarianism, environmentalism, his governmental intervention in many areas of business.

 

While we are on thay subject though the right would love him for his love of "traditional values," anti-immigration stance, re-building of the military, and his more authoritarian ways.

 

And both would love him for his international interventionism.

 

So really what I am seeing here is a candidate who would appeal to both the left and the right. :lol2: If that doesn't sum up this election year I don't know what does.

The U.S. Constitution has served as a check on political power for more than two centuries. I worry that the growing power of the executive branch and administrative law are undermining our written laws and empowering our president.

 

A powerful executive branch, unchecked by the other branches of government, opens the door to tyrants like Hitler. We have never been more susceptible to that threat than we are today.

Hitler didn't come to power proposing the extermination of anyone. So to say we as a nation would never allow someone into power like that is basically a false example. He was voted into power, by blaming others, threatening their expulsion, and trading on the fears and prejudices that existed. That is similar to what is going on. Does that make Trump a Hitler? Of course not. But it is worth talking about. Trump said he could kill a guy in the street and not lose support. Is that true? It truly kinda is true, which is indicative of how an authoritarian figure gets and keeps power, by making enemies of everyone else (they are the reason your life sucks) and vague promises (trust me, I can fix it).

 

And HRC aint much better. In a different way than Trump, but she is about as establishment as establishment can be. With all the side trimmings of shady deals and skirting the law that one can expect.
