Newport Central Catholic 21 Covington Holy Cross 0

Looking forward to seeing the numbers from this one....... @nkypete

Holy Cross QB Couch went out of the game in the 2nd quarter and didn't return, got hit pretty hard (concussion possibly).

NewCath's Kurtis Sutkamp went out in the late 3rd/early 4th and didn't return. Hunter Pittman went out late 4th.

Hopefully all these players are able to return HEALTHY for next week.

You couldn't ask for better weather tonight. Both teams were hitting hard.

I thought both teams looked solid on Defense

Good Size, nice athletes, and not a lot of missed tackles.

Somewhere tonight Noel Rash just had a bad thought.

Congrats NCC.

This team is coming together nice.

NewCath has NOT lost a district game, 32-0, since the move to 2A in 2007.

Great hitting game. Would love to see these 2 teams meet in the playoffs again.

Random thoughts:

*For all those calling for Holy Cross to line up the big dogs in the backfield and go at they did do that at times but I got to tell you they need to limit them from being on the field on offense and defense so much. They expend a lot of energy on defense because they both go at it so hard. They hit so hard but in doing so it has to take it a toll.

*NCC actually played a smart and controlled game which seems to take 6 or 7 weeks before they can put it all together.

*Both teams blitzed a lot and I think they had to take some chances because neither could just sit back and the other run it down their throat.

*With the talented large Senior class at Holy Cross leaving after this year I'm pretty sure that Holy Cross will dress more coaches than players next year.

* NCC kickoff strategy was effective in that no long returns happened and I think they were content to allow HC to start at the 30 or 35.

*Holy Cross rugby punt vs NCC high deep punts was interesting. HC almost downed the first punt of the game at the 1 but didn't. After that they did not allow NCC to return any but punts were not going very far. A net of 30 or so is not the way to go. NCC punter had a good game.

The Breds played a smart game tonight and did look better prepared. Both defenses definitely came to play. It seemed like Holy Cross blitzed a lot. I'm kind of surprised that the Breds didn't utilize the screen more in efforts to stop some of the blitzing. I was very impressed with Newport Catholic in their ability to contain Abernathy and Barnes as well as they did overall throughout most of the game.

Wrobleski making a VERY strong case for All-State punter, he can kick some moon shots.

One time he hit an NFL-quality punt of 57 yards with no return that flipped NCC from being in bad field position to HC being in bad field position. That is huge in a high school game.

Lyons #14 got an earful from the HC staff for not fair catching that one.

Oh and I would not be surprised if these two are the Region Final game.

They have to get passed the Juggs first!
