Because its not voluntary! I will use if, even though I dont think I have to, but if there is a "blacks only" dorm, meaning that no white person can move in, how is that voluntary? That is a public school telling white people they are not allowed to live somewhere because of their skin color.

I don't think it will make a difference one way or another. How has not having an option to live in a black only dorm helped improve current race relations? How is sleeping, showering and using the bathroom with like skinned people detrimental to race relations?

Every public official, beginning at the top with the POTUS, would decry such a thing as racist and comparisons to the Jim Crow south would abound. Public protests would instantly arise everywhere and you would see agreement on this from a wide variety of people and groups who cannot usually agree on much of anything. Ben Shapiro and Colin Kaepernick would be marching arm-in-arm. There is no question every poster on BGP would have been outraged and said so in multiple threads.

 

So when a school in California announces they are establishing a "blacks only" dorm, it is hard to see how that is any different than telling African-Americans they are not welcome in a "whites only" dorm. The double standard is inconceivable.

I'm not sure what is so obtuse about that. I'd have happily moved into that dorm and still dated women and had friends of different shapes, colors and sizes.

But if the local authorities said, that blacks weren't welcome in the "white restaurant", that would be racist. This is what Cal State Univ is doing.

Establishing a "blacks only" dorm clearly states their desire to have an exclusive dorm and puts significant pressure on a white students to not apply for residency there. Even if they would "allow" a few white students to reside there it is still the stated purpose of the university to have a dorm for black students, not white students or Asian or Latino.

 

Just ask what the perception would be if Cal Univ of LA had said it was opening a "whites only" dorm. Yes, they would allow a few African-American students to reside there if they apply for it but the intent is to establish a place where white students would feel safe to interact with students from their own culture and race. Would African-American students view that as racist? I say, yes, plain and simple.

Most dorms on public universities are predominately white. I bet 85% and higher white occupation in most cases. Whites already have a space where it is safe to interact with students of their own race and culture.
