I am fairly sure the WLSTATs guys get paid. I assume by the school/team. We have had the same guy doing for 10 years at almost every game. And they will bring a spotter usually, sometimes a parent has to fill in as spotter. But leads to good solid stats for the defense.

 

As I have stated - tackles are definitely the hardest stat to do in real time.

Actually JoJo you can set it for 1 solo and up to 2 assists, it the primary/ asst tackle setting that we usually leave off. WL Stats uses the .5 for assists which NFL and Arena do as well, but KHSAA doesn't neither does NCAA. If you had 2 solo & 2 assists for KHSAA and NCAA that equals 4 tackles, with setting WL using it is 3 tackles. I really agree with their setting but use what KHSAA does.

Also just an FYI, that is same software used by me and JoJo, as well as Trinity, Male, And Central.

Deflating stats is a common thing for all the Daddy Ball guys sitting in the press box - most of them have a man crush on one player or another from year to year. Deflate the stats, get little Johnny noticed by the local papers, maybe it will turn into a scholorship to Notre Dame. I sit back and watch it year after year and find it to be hilarious.

 

Even worse - the media guys voting all state teams based off of the deflated stats.

Here is how not following the guidelines impacts stats for tackles.

 

WLSTATs (and those doing it correctly) assigns 1 tackle per play. Solo =1, assisted = .5 each player for 2 players.

 

So a player that has 3 assisted tackles will show up with 1.5 tackles total in the WLSTATs. KHSAA stats do not differentiate between solo and assisted. So....KHSAA will show this as 3 total tackles.

 

KHSAA seems to know that this stat is often skewed or in many cases - schools do not seem to report it at all (again, a difficult stat to keep in real time). So there is no KHSAA 'most tackles' list.

 

In my #21 post above there were 3 teams that had 2 players over 100 tackles for the season (last column, A,B,C). In one case two players show almost 300 tackles between them. Their solo to total ratio was above 60%. Not too bad from what would be expected.

 

But in the case of team C the two players had solo to total ratios at 43 and 40%. That would almost definitely be 'stat inflation'. And since KHSAA counts assisted tackles the same as solo these players look much better stat-wise than their peers.

 

Of course at All-State time the KHSAA number is the only one cited.

 

I too do not want to offend anyone but the numbers confirm that the 'tackles' stat is not well kept across the state.

If more than two assisted with a tackle as a stat guy, I always converted that to a team tackle!

For tackling statistics I think every team should do it the same way -- just rely on the game announcer.

You guys have obviously never gotten a call from an irate mom who swears her kid made "40 tackles" in Friday's game, then you look at the stat sheet and see the leading tackler that night had 12 ... and her son had five! :lol2:

I have a similar story. For our now defunct semi-pro team we had a backup. Running back battling for time, we had some talented guys and he wasn't one of them, he had earned the nickname "runs like gerbil", his legs churned didn't go anywhere. After one of the games where we were winning and he got lots of carries in mop up duty, he whined about his stats to me. Then I come to practice on Monday with dvd's of the game for everyone. He gets one then him and his dad come to me next practice with their yellow notepad disputing his rushing stats. They though his yardage started where he got the handoff or pitch to where he was tackled, No mention of line of scrimmage. It was hilarious bursting that bubble.
