If you don't know stats, you probably should get someone else to do them

Featured Replies

I feel your pain @Jo-Jo13, except mine is from the softball side of things. You'll love this one, I've seen defensive stats for 2nd basemen, SS, & 3rd basemen that never had an assist the whole season, yet they played every game at those positions.......but they had a ton of putouts. :lol2: And don't get me started on the offensive silliness that can take place.

Like others have mentioned it's usually a parent or student that gets the task of doing the stats, and they should be applauded for their efforts, but it would be nice if they could be given a Stats 101 refresher course before starting.

Now don't get me wrong there are some people who are very good at their job and I think give fair and accurate totals..but for each one of those I think you will find 3 to 4 who are either taking a wild guess or giving tackles to their cousin's kid even though he wasn't even 10 feet from the ball HAHA

Hey, that was the best solo tackle the kid ever had.

I do all my Def stats off film & try to catch every Asst & solo

also if a kid, say a DT on a Trap , blows up the trapper like we teach causing the LB to get an easy SOLO , I give that DT an ASSIST because he actually made the play happen. Also, late in the game, when you unload the bench, if I have a kid that runs to ball & gets Somewhat close to the pile, I will slide that kid an Asst, likely the only 1 he will get all year. Makes the kid feel a part of the team when he sees his name show up on Friday Night game stast sheet we post in locker room . It doesnt hurt anything & certainly dont effect the state stats report

NFHS Book from 2003. (I assume for tackles its still valid):

https://www.nfhs.org/media/865876/stat_manual_2003.pdf

SECTION 12: Tackles/Sacks

Provision 1:

If a ball carrier is stopped solely or primarily because of

the efforts of one defensive player, that player should be credited

with a solo or unassisted tackle. No more than one solo tackle can

be credited on any one play. Tackles for losses and pass sacks

should result in a player getting credit for that action and a solo

tackle.

Provision 2:

If two defensive players contribute equally to the stopping

of a ball carrier, credit both players with an assisted tackle, but give

neither a solo tackle. (NOTE: In a situation where there is not a solo

tackle, there should not be more than two assists credited except in

rare instances. In other words, on any given play one of the follow-

ing may be credited: 1) one solo tackle, or 2) two assisted tackles.

Only in the rarest of cases would more than two assisted tackles be

credited.)

The simple way to put it when done correctly is:

Either 1 player gets a solo or 2 get an assist and it caps at 2.

Curious, how can these assists not affect the stats report if they aren't actually assists?

This subject was something I have had angst about in the past - and even have some interesting stats below.

A lot of schools simply do not keep tackles. It can be understandable. If you do not have at least two people doing the stats its all but impossible to get this stat near accurate. Pile ups, numbers hard to see, etc. To do tackles in real time (btw, love the doing off film thing above) you need to have a dedicated spotter with binoculars. They have to watch while the pile is unpiling and get the 'most likely' number or numbers to record. Its tedious.

I have done my share of comparing stats - both at a selfish level and just as an interested observer. Here is the conclusion. If a school is not using an objective professional stats team (like WLSTATs that most of the Lexington areas school use) - they are over recording or incorrectly recording tackles if they are keeping them - in general.

If the percentage of assisted tackles is greater than 40% or even 30% then they are doing it wrong. I have looked at professional (WLSTATs) statistics for this for years. Solo tackles always are more that 60% of their stats for a player and usually more than 70%. If a player has 100 tackles and only 30 are solo then the stat team is giving out assisted tackles an unusually high clip.

For what its worth here are some real stats from top players a few years ago. It shows the above.

I take defensive stats very seriously. I do not do them live because the game is too fast and we don't get commercials. Like others mentioned, we add ours later after watching film. In the Holy Cross game Saturday, I actually took away a fumble recovery from one of our players because it was off a muffed punt. By definition, a muffed punt is NOT a fumble because the player never had possession.

Are teams required to report weekly stats? I see Campbell County hasn't reported week 0 or week 1 stats.

There is only one HS "stat" more inaccurate and misleading than "tackles"...

...40 time.

Apparently there are 117 kids in KY that can outrun Usain Bolt

I call shenanigans. That's not right, but to each his own.

Kind of like the state having a boatload of Nolan Ryan types on the ball diamonds as well. :lol2:

Thanks Bluegrasscard for that post from the NFHS rule book. I had never seen an actual definition, or rule as far as HS defensive stats. I have done stats for High School, Semi-pro using NFL rules, and Arena 2. And I have read the NCAA stats manual. All define tackles like this 1 solo or 2 assists. Nice to see it laid out and backing up what JoJo is saying.

Here is the WLSTATs website.

These are objective paid stat keepers who use spotters and software to capture the stats.

http://www.wlstats.net/2016_fb/fb16.htm

Stats here can provide some insight into what well kept stats for tackles should look like.

I love the comparison to the 40. This stat can be abused for sure.

Deflating stats is a common thing for all the Daddy Ball guys sitting in the press box - most of them have a man crush on one player or another from year to year. Deflate the stats, get little Johnny noticed by the local papers, maybe it will turn into a scholorship to Notre Dame. I sit back and watch it year after year and find it to be hilarious.

Even worse - the media guys voting all state teams based off of the deflated stats.

Best post I've seen on here in a while.

Sorry if I offended anyone but you guys know I speak the truth.

exact same stat program I use. It only allows 1 solo or 2 assists.
