CovCath comes out on top in high-scoring football game against Oak Hills

 

Covington Catholic sophomore Casey McGinness scored one touchdown rushing, one on a pass reception and another on a kickoff return during his team’s 56-48 win over Oak Hills on Thursday in a Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown game played at Mount St. Joseph University.

 

The Colonels took a 14-7 lead on a 46-yard touchdown run by McGinness in the second quarter and he caught a 70-yard TD pass from junior quarterback AJ Mayer in the third quarter that made it 28-7. After Oak Hills opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back touchdowns that cut the margin to 42-28, McGinness got the momentum back in his team’s favor by scoring on a 90-yard kickoff return.

 

CovCath had a commanding 56-28 lead with less than seven minutes left in the game, but Oak Hills was able to score 20 straight points before time ran out.

CovCath moves to 2-1 all time against Oak Hills.

Safe to say both defenses need work? Not too sure you'll win a ton of games giving up 35 points in the final quarter. Good win by the Colonels though.

The CovCath defense is hampered by a lack of overall team speed and too much arm tackling. I don't know if anything can done about the team speed, but the tackling can and should be cleaned up quickly.

I had to do a double take when I opened this thread. Thought I had mistakenly opened an old basketball thread. Wow!

Mayer passed for 286 yards 4 tds and ran for 81 yards 1 td.

 

Strong effort.

Oak Hills scored 35 points in the 4th quarter.

 

Seems like having fewer players going both ways could have prevented a bit of that for the Colonels.

 

On the other hand, CCH won by one TD. If they hadn't played those key players both ways the whole game, would they have won at all? Maybe the best way to approach would have been to play the backups once CCH had the big lead and let those key players rest until needed again.

Awesome work Colonels. Way to represent Kentucky.

I thought CovCath's offense played very well, Mcguiness is special, and AJ as a runner is a great 1 - 2 punch... Defense is another story... they have many areas of concern... last night D-line played pretty well, much better than against Ryle... Might be the competition, but d-line played a good game.

 

The secondary is really struggling, they don't seem confident in their scheme, and they don't tackle well overall.

 

I don't know if it was kids not following their responsibility, or a poor defensive call, but several times in the 4th quarter Oak Hills had multiple wide open recievers... I think they scored on 3 drives of less than 3 plays in the 4th quarter... that just can't happen to a quality HS defense... if the scheme and/or the execution don't improve passing yards against CovCath will continue to be record setting in a bad way.
