Rangers @ Reds (8/23-8/24)

I don't recall ever seeing a player patrol CF like Billy does. Maybe Griffey Jr. but even he didn't have the pure athletic ability to make plays like Billy does. He's phenomenal.

If he doesn't win the Gold Glove, it would be outright thievery.

Iglesias let's the first two get on in the 7th. Then Andrus hits a sharp ground ball to Suarez at third. Suarez steps on third and rushes the throw to second, BP can't handle it in the dirt and they only get one out. A wild pitch moves the runners to second and third. Iglesias then beared down and got two strikeouts to end it.

Any idea why BP tried to bare-hand the throw from Suarez? It was a bad throw (unnecessarily) and don't think BP could have done anything with it even if he tried to use his glove, but he didn't even try. He was in an awkward position with his body lean as I think he had designs of a triple play if the throw from Suarez was good (unlikely with Andrus running but the ball was sharply hit right at Suarez who was right by the bag).

He sure covered some ground on that catch he had last night.

Votto thrown out at the plate by 15 feet to end the 4th. Joey basically stopped heading into third base before going home. Upon further review though, it was terrible coaching by Billy Hatcher. A very late wave and the wave was not very noticeable.

On a ball in RF, the runner is relying solely on the third base coach and Hatcher just messed that up terribly.

Agree that Hatcher didn't react to the misplay in RF well. HOWEVER, in my book with 2 outs (in a close game that had the feel of an upcoming pitcher's duel) I want my players busting a hump and planning to score unless a clear STOP sign is thrown up by the 3B coach -- particularly when the ball is in RF and the base runner has absolutely no idea what's happening. That is not what Votto did. Votto assumed it was a routine play that the RF was going to get in front of and he'd coast into 3B. You know what they say about donkey / u / me. :)

I don't think it's a coincidence that they started performing better once the likes of Disco, Homer, Iglesias, and Lorenzen all got healthy. Completely changed the makeup of the team. Instead of Ohlendorf and Wood in the pressure situations we get Lorenzen and Iglesias. Makes a big difference.

Valid point, but how does that explain the position players? They have all been here since opening day, and played terrible early in the season.

No they haven't. The offense has been average to above-average all season long.

10 of the 24 games in April they scored 2 runs or less.

He should win two gold gloves for what he does in CF.

OK? They are right in the middle of MLB teams in runs scored for the year.

I never felt that way, at least with the position players. But the bullpen flat out sucked at the beginning of the year. Now, whether or not some of those guys didn't care, I don't know. It could of been mailing it in, inexperience, poor coaching, or just plain ol' bad luck...but, whatever it was, man it was not pretty.

Look at the players in the bullpen then and the players in the bullpen now. As much as people want to complain about effort and coaches and managers, performance is more about talent than anything else. There was no major league level talent in the bullpen at the start of the year. Now there is. Hence, the Reds bullpen has the lowest ERA of any bullpen in the NL since the All Star break.

Does anyone have the stats on hitters with two strikes on them? Votto has to be one of the best in baseball at hitting with two strikes on him.

Votto is .334 OBP/.339 SLG/.673 OPS with two strikes on him. He also has 7 HR's and 35 RBI (more than half his current total) with two strikes on him. One last interesting stat - currently 519 plate appearances and in 296 he has gone to two strikes.

Injury's all piled up at the beginning of the year, if not for losing pitching they would be around 500 , they are closer than we think with being respectable again.

He's only hitting .216 with two strikes. His OBP is solid enough though.

Where are you getting your numbers? He has 74 RBI for the season.

I've never seen an outfielder cover the distance(and at 22 mph!!!) that Billy did on that ball Tuesday night. Incredible. Last night, while looking at the replay of that catch, one of the ESPN anchors said : "Water covers three-fourths of the Earth's surface; Billy Hamilton covers the other fourth."

Votto with a bonehead play to aid the Rangers to three runs.
