Any chance Votto gets traded to Toronto in off season?

I believe Jim Bowden brought up on one of the sports talks shows recently that Toronto has a ton of free agents after this season that they may choose to not re-sign at season's end (Bautista,Encarnacion, several other big names) and their starting first baseman is Justin Smoak who is doing very little this season to this point. They could add Canadian Votto, pick up his contract and maybe start a semi-rebuild without those other guys who have been there forever. Of course the Reds would get prospects, don't know what Toronto has in the farm system. Seemed like an interesting idea from Bowden.

If Bowden's suggesting the Reds do it, you can guarantee it'd be a bad move.

There would definitely be teams interested in Votto IMO. Toronto would be a logical choice with his connections there, but they have a very poor farm system, and I doubt they'd be willing to give up their top 4-5 prospects if they were planning to rebuild around a guy like Votto.

To your overall point though, yes I think the Reds could theoretically trade him if they wanted to. I do not expect them to though.

Anyone the Reds could use on the Blue Jay roster in a trade other than or along with prospects? Freeing up that 24Mil a year you could possibly sign a number 1 free agent pitcher or even a really good first baseman as Votto's replacement. Hope they don't do it, but as Bowden said, if your all in for the re-bulid you make that move or another to get rid of Votto's contract, along with Cozart and Phillips

If you're freeing up that kind of cash you don't want to turn around and invest it all (or the majority of it) in one player. It'd be no different than keeping Votto.

They need to move Phillips and Homer before they consider moving Joey IMO.

One way or another I fully expect BP to no longer be a Red come 2017.

So they are going to swallow the 14 mil?

Joey may be the only Red over performing his contract. I'm not a fan of the deal the Reds signed him to but can't argue with the results.

I'd bet he's a Red forever.

Ya know, we should really have a thread dedicated to absurd Joey Votto facts/stats. It seems we could almost have a new one daily. :lol2: Guy is ridiculous.

Votto's approach and swing is evolving into what Barry Bonds was doing later in his career. Very patient at the plate. Take the walk if they don't give you a good pitch. Very short, compact swing. Choking up on the bat, especially when behind in the count is another thing Bonds was doing. Bonds used a short bat too. What size bat does Votto use?

I'm always amazed when he does that then flicks a double or HR to left field. Amazing.

Was thinking about this a bit last night.

If the Blue Jays would offer a package similar to Devon Travis, Dalton Pompey, Sein Reid-Foley, Anthony Alford, Richard Urena, and Vlad Guerrero Jr. in exchange for Votto, I'd probably do it if I'm the Reds. Outside of something of that magnitude, I wouldn't even entertain the idea.
