Dylann Roof Assaulted by Fellow Inmate in Charleston Jail

Dylann Roof assaulted by inmate in Charleston jail - NY Daily News

The hate-filled South Carolina man accused of slaughtering nine worshipers inside a church last year was roughed up in jail Thursday morning, officials said.

Dylann Roof was assaulted by another inmate inside the Cannon Detention Center, the Charleston Post and Courier reported.

The inmate — identified as Dwayne Stafford by local media — will be charged with third-degree assault and battery, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said.

Roof was not seriously injured and returned to his cell after jail medical staffers checked him out.

Deputies believe Stafford pounced when Roof was either walking to the shower or the jail’s recreation area. The alleged killer has been in solitary confinement ever since he was arrested in June 2015.

Roof was charged with nine counts of murder in state court and a slew of federal crimes following his alleged rampage inside Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church.

He prayed with the black congregation for an hour during an evening Bible study before he pulled out a gun and opened fire, police said. He killed the church’s senior pastor and eight other worshipers before fleeing the scene. When he was arrested a day later, he told police he wanted to start a race war.

After his capture, police uncovered Roof's bigoted manifesto in which he claimed he has “no choice” but to kill black people. Photos on his social media accounts showed him wrapped in a Confederate flag.

Roof is facing the death penalty in both his state and federal trials.

To be honest, I'm surprised this guy is still breathing this earth's air.

He deserves everything he gets in prison.

Not only did he kill some great people, but he alone is reason the Dukes of Hazard ain't on anymore.

To quote the immortal Ivan Drago, "If he dies, he dies"

He was ruled competent for trial.

Let him in the general population and get it overwith. Save the taxpayer $$$.

My guess is if he was put in general population, certain prison groups think he's a rock star and they'll try to protect him. However, in my opinion no matter the protection, he wouldn't survive that long in GP.

If Dylann was incarcerated in Maine or Vermont(two states where felons can vote) he could have still voted for Trump. Donald lost one vote when Roof was locked away.

You're so butt hurt it's comedy.

Maybe so. :) The therapist said BGP would be a good outlet for me to vent my frustration.

I think I(and other D's) will feel better about the future of the party after a couple of years of Trump.

Btw, there's no damn way Roof would have been a HRC voter.

Give it up already!

Look at the "no one's home" stare...........I think otherwise!

Dylann Roof will represent himself in Charleston shooting trial - NY Daily News

Charleston church shooting suspect Dylann Roof can represent himself in the trial for the mass murder, a judge ruled Monday.

Roof filed a motion Sunday asking to dismiss his counsel, and argued in court Monday that he wants to represent himself in court, according to WISTV.

U.S. District Court Judge Richard Gergel advised Roof he thought it was "wise" for the suspect to keep his counsel. But the judge still accepted Roof's request.

The ruling comes just three days after Gergel declared Roof competent to stand trial.

Roof, 22, is the lone suspect for the fatal shootings of nine parishioners at a black church in June 2015.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
