6 Class System is NOT Watered Down

Featured Replies

Has anybody addressed the "geography" issue. Years ago when the last alignment was produced, it was in effort to make more "geographical" sense. In other words toss out as many absurd long drives from within the district. Now, you see an alignment with teams traveling 3+ hours. Did they think about the fans? The schools? Family? With gas prices and cost of bus/drivers is it making sense?

Really? Johnson Central/Ashland/Bryan Station/Woodford Co.????

Harlan at Shelby County??? :scared:

The geography issue is not good in this system already! Russell's district at this moment (and for the past several years) consists of Morgan County (2 hours on a bus), Powell County (2+ hours on a bus) and Estill County (2 and 1/2 hours on a bus).

Sure, JC driving to Bryan Station/Woodford Co. is a long trip! Mapquest claims it is 2 hours 22 minutes, less time than Russell to Estill County. And, at least those schools are off of I64! The ride is relatively smooth.

Yeah, but as long as the KHSAA is in charge of high school athletics in KY it will always be about the adult fans and even more so THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR.

If it were truly a decision about the kids, then ALL other sports would be watered down to 6 classes also, even the revered "Sweet Sixteen".

You are right. The KHSAA is undoubtedly concerned about money. Then again, they have to be don't they? If they do not have sufficient revenues, how can they operate? A whole lot of people on here and a whole lot of schools have clamored for increased investigation into allegations of recruiting and cheating haven't they? Well, just how is the KHSAA to pay for those investigations (they do use outside investigative professionals) if they don't have sufficient revenues? People on here and the schools clamor for increased enforcement of the rules. How are they to pay for the legal expenses of increased enforcement if they don't have sufficient revenues? How are they expected to provide quality state championship events if they don't have sufficient revenues? And don't think for a minute that the ticket revenues at the state championship events covers the costs. Other than football and basketball, I think the rest of the championships are money losing events. The cost of catastrophic insurance (and Ky provides the Cadillac of insurance because they believe that they should provide the best coverage available to help out the families of kids suffering catastrophic injuries and I commend them for that) is outrageous. How could they do that if they did not have sufficient revenues? The schools already complain about the membership costs of the KHSAA. If the KHSAA was not concerned about the Almighty Dollar (as you call it) the membership dues and ticket prices would be much, much higher and would hurt the schools and fans even more. Do you still think it is wrong that the KHSAA is worried about the Almighty Dollar and what alternatives do you propose?

Like the one coach said this is not Little League or Pony League where everyone gets a trophy. I totally agree.

Johnny Bravo, I believe the logic is that with smaller districts, even though there are undoubtedly still some long drives, the hope is that the costs of those long district trips will be offset by having more open weeks to schedule nearby teams. In a 4 team district, even if the other three teams that you face are a long drive, you most likely would have only two long trips one year and one long trip the other year. Its not like a school is going to be making long trips to its district opponents every year under a typical home/away contract scenario. If there are only two long district trips a year and the rest of the district and non district games are close to home, do you still think travel under the new alignment is such a big concern? Most school officials did not and indicated in their responses to a request for input by the KHSAA that they were overwhelmingly in favor of the 6 classes.

That argument doesn't hold water.

The schools involved have the cost of the investigation included in any fines issued.

Isn't that only true if the school is found guilty of something?

What about all the time and money spent investigating all the transfer waiver requests in the normal course of business? Not to mention all the other reports of alleged violations that have to be investigated. I'm sure the great majority of those end up with no findings of wrong doing and they can't very well make the school under investigation pay the costs of that.

These teams have multiple championships. (3 or more) What "outside" teams do you see jumping up and knocking them off because there are now two more classes.

CLASS A - Beechwood (10), Mayfield (7), Paris (3), Pikeville (3)

CLASS 2A - Danville (10), Bardstown (4), Corbin (3), Ft Campbell (3), Ft Knox (3)

CLASS 3A - Breathitt Co (3), Russellville (3)

CLASS 4A - Boyle Co (5)

CLASS 5A - Highlands (16), Covington Catholic (5)

CLASS 6A - Trinity (16), St. Xavier (10), Male (5)

IMVHO...I believe the new system will make it even easier for the traditional powers to win because they have LESS competition. Beechwood & Mayfield don't have to worry about Danville anymore...Boyle and LexCath can ignore Highlands and CovCath and as you can see, there are many more examples. My vote...watered down.

I agree. Male's JV team could win their district

I believe each athlete in KY is charged for this insurance coverage.

I do not think it is wrong to be concerned about the dollar but I do believe some decisions are made based on the financial implications rather than the good of the kids and more importantly, the membership schools.

I believe the KHSAA forgets from time to time that without the schools, they do not exist.

An alternative??

How about if the private schools want to be part of the KHSAA and compete with public schools on an unbalanced playing field then let the private schools pay a premium for membership.

BTW, what does insurance have to do with 6 classes??

Isn't that only true if the school is found guilty of something?

Bill the schools that request the investigation the cost if no wrongdoing is found then.

Bingo. And I can assure you that the vast majority of allegations, after they are all ran down, find no proof of cheating. Most of them are baseless rumors involving "he said, she said" stuff and 4th hand rumors floating around the locker room and parent groups. Thus, no reimbursement of the costs.

And the poster only addressed one of the many, many costs incurred by the KHSAA in order to run high school sports in Ky. Don't get me wrong, there is some waste at the KHSAA, but not near as much as some would think. In fact the KHSAA is trying to amend its rules (subject to member school approval) to decrease the minimum number of required Board of Control meetings to reduce the costs of holding those meetings. They would use more committee meetings (which involve less BOC members, thus reducing the costs of the meetings) to handle certain matters. But at the end of the day, the KHSAA has to be concerned with its revenues if it is to operate in the manner that the members want it to operate.

Not in the eyes of who it matters most with and that is the kids on those championship teams.

This is HIGH SCHOOL athletics and it should be about what the kids think and not the adult fans.

The kids will think NO LESS of themselves for winning a state title in 6 classes. The front page stories in their local newspaper will be the same. The pep rallies will be the same. The parades afterwards will be the same. The patches for the jackets will be the same. ETC, ETC, ETC.

The only difference will be in some adult's mind that wants to believe that. But HS athletics is NOT about what goes on in that adult's mind.

Yes, I agree. It is bitter adults who have brought these changes.. I believe if it were up to the kids, things would stay the same. But, nontheless, change happens. Time will tell if this system is the answer to what the vast majority are looking for. What the kids want does not seem to be an issue.

Bill the schools that request the investigation the cost if no wrongdoing is found then.

The KHSAA is so money hungry, that if that was the policy, they would use it for a fundraising tool!

Bill the schools that request the investigation the cost if no wrongdoing is found then.

Sorry, but that's just not fair. Its like a prosecutor investigating you of a crime and he finds no proof that you committed the crime, the prosecutor then billing you for the investigation costs. I'm sure you'd freely pay that bill wouldn't you? NOT.

Heck, mean spirited fans could bankrupt a school by turning in false allegations against the school. You may want to rethink your proposition.

Oh and by the way, your idea violates the KHSAA's constitution and I doubt there would be any support by the member schools to amend the constitution in the fashion you propose.

I believe each athlete in KY is charged for this insurance coverage.

Actually the schools pay for a base level of insurance. Some schools may pass this on to the students. But the KHSAA foots the bill for the catastrophic insurance entirely, so you may have bad scoop.

What does this have to do with 6 classes? Nothing in my opinion. But you are the one that said the KHSAA did this just to get the Almighty Dollar and I was simply pointing out that the KHSAA has to be concerned with its revenues (and pursuit of the Almighty Dollar). Why did you bring up the Almighty Dollar to begin with if you didn't think it was germane?

And what's your logic for having a private school pay more to be in the KHSAA? Other than perhaps your dislike of private schools, which isn't sufficient justification.

Kids want to go to McDonald's for lunch everyday and have classes with no homework, no assignments and no tests, too.

My post no way reads that I say "Give the kids what they want."

My post says that the kids who will win district, regional and state crowns WILL NOT CARE that they come in 6 classes.

But for the record, I think most kids in a good # of schools around the state and not just shopping for opinions at Highlands, X, Trinity, Beechwood, etc, will be supportive of this move.

As far as those who post about letting in a school that goes 0-9 or wins only 1-2 games into the playoffs, are you suggesting we change the playoff system for ALL OTHER SPORTS that lets ALL PLAYERS/TEAMS into the playoffs.

A golfer shoots an 140 on 18 holes and they get to participate in the regional golf tournament.
