On our old b&w TV, I really had no idea what I was watching. With all the shadows and our fuzzy reception, it was hard to see. I'm sorry, but I need more explanation of this statement. Is that the pickles' military base? Do we have to worry about a bunch of uppity pickles usurping our spot atop the food chain?

At that time, a pickle base was an allotted amount acreage on which pickle cucumbers could be grown on your farm. It was assigned and monitored by the county agent. If you did not have a base, you could not grow pickle cucumbers for resale. Tobacco used to be like that too, though they changed from acreage to volume in the early 70's for tobacco. There were only so many bases available for allotment by the county. My grandfather had a tobacco base and we worked that every year. Dad applied for and got a pickle base this one year. Even my father, who never saw a day of work he didn't like, dumped the base after the season ended. Not enough juice for the squeeze, so to speak. It was a lot of hard work and he didn't have enough kids.
