The more I think about the MLB All Star Game & how it determines home field advantage for the World Series, the more ridiculous it gets. Why in the world does the ASG still determine home field advantage?

 

I recognize that Bud Selig overreacted following the 2002 ASG that ended in a tie. The ASG has determined home field advantage since '03, and it's downright silly.

 

Prior to tonight's game, Jose Fernandez was quoted as saying that he intended to groove three (3) straight fastballs to David Ortiz hoping that Big Papi would go yard in his final ASG. The game ended with Nolan Arenado jogging to first base, presumably thinking that the 2nd out was actually the 3rd out & end of the game. Are those really the half-hearted plays major league baseball wants determining home field advantage?

 

It's time to abolish this ridiculous rule, effective immediately.

Sorry, the corny tag line is actually "This time it counts"...and it's still stupid.

24 out of that last 30 team with home field won the series. 2014 was the first time since 1979 a team won game 7 on the road.

The previous way was stupid, rotating years. I get what they tried to accomplish with the All Star game deciding it for the last 13 years but its time for another change. Should be best overall record. Head to head for a tie break. If the two teams didn't meet during the season then maybe inter league record, then All Star game maybe.

Half the players are on teams that are already out of the race for the playoffs. Why do they care?

Nothing prohibits a game from still going into extras and using all of the players, does it? What happens if a game goes to the 13th or 14th, is there some kind of added rule I am unaware of that makes scoring easier?

When they run out of pitchers and position players hit the mound, the odds of scoring increases.

For the record, It's an exhibition game showcasing those players who have earned the respect of the fans and coaches for only participating in half of a season? I'm OK with a tie for this exhibition. Asking a group of baseball all stars to make the game matter is like asking for the NBA all stars to play defense or the NFL pro bowlers to take out someone at the knees.

Rotating it was stupid, in the fact that the teams had no control over the outcome. Using the All-Star game was also just as ridiculous, because of the way the game was played (at least nowdays).

 

Best overall record may keep some teams' foot on the pedal down the stretch, and would be great thru the NL and AL championships since the schedule is a little more equitable.

 

But, let me toss this into the mix...what about using interleague results? And since there's an odd number of teams in each league, and interleague play happens on a regular basis...I'd quantify it by saying you make the decision based upon the results prior to the September call ups. That way teams that are "out of it" and experimenting with younger players, won't have as much of an impact.

I get that, but that is no different than 2002.

 

First of all can't believe it was that long ago! Players have planes to catch, injuries can happen. Let it end in a tie.

My proposal:

 

The best overall record should be awarded home field advantage. If both teams have the same record, then you can use interleague play results a a tiebreaker. I'd be open to other tiebreakers, too.

If that were the case the American League would always have home field advantage--which is okay by me.
