Question about Heat Index...

Featured Replies

I know Kentucky (and probably all other states) have a strict heat index rule, as they should but here is a question for you that are in the know.

What about Heat Index during 7on7 games? Is rule negated since game is not played with pads and only 30 minutes?

Just curious. I know rule still applies with practice times.

Thoughts??

There is nothing that negates the heat index rule.

The heat rules apply to all sports, regadless to equipment worn.

Correct

Heat index rules apply regardless of equipment.

If they are allowing helmets to be worn they have to come off if the index hits 100. They have to stop if the index hits 104.

Also have to take mandatory water breaks every 30 years for 10 minutes.

One water break in 30 years, thats impressive.

The guidelines can be found on the KHSAA website.

I think you would be surprised what states do and don't have heat index rules. Ohio does not from understanding.

I have been researching the Georgia High School Association Heat Policy and they do have one. By-Law 2.67 is for

their Institutional Heat Policy. The interesting thing is that it talks about being for practices and scrimmages only and not games. Their reasoning:

"The researchers who conducted the 3-year study on heat illness agreed with the GHSA administrators that there are enough built-in opportunities for players to get rest and hydration breaks during the course of a game. Everyone on the team is not participating intensely at one time. Officials and coaches are available to monitor 22 players in a game setting, while coaches may have 100 or more players to monitor during a practice setting."

There you go!
