July 8, 201610 yr I have disagree. These are not the dumbest generations. We have more in college and in secondary school than ever before. Don't say because things are dumbed down because they're not if anything it's more difficult. Intelligence is there. Our divide is no different than it has ever been, but today everybody knows. It pops up on your Facebook, Twitter, snapchat, BGP, etc. instantly along with a myriad of comments. Peoples' stupid views didn't start in 2000 or 2008: people have always had stupid views. People have always acted on stupid views, but now they can be influenced by someone around the globe whereas before they couldn't form that thought enough to get outraged. Today stupid actions are blasted on the news and evaluated for hours. The problems that have fostered this violence is real, but many want to turn a blind eye or get defensive. Both sides share the fault of feeding these radicals when they draw lines and refuse to change. What we need today are leaders not rabble rousers. We don't need dividers we need people to unite. We need people that want a culture that strives to come together rather than one that wants to rip us into sections.
July 8, 201610 yr In short, this is the dumbest generation of humans in the history of the planet. When you look at, per capita, the amount of information and the ease of obtaining it compared to any time in our history, we are incredibly undereducated. Additionally, we have so many more avenues to express ourselves outside of our own communities that we can reach more in less time than ever before. SO, we have dumber people speaking more. Meaning we have dumber people listening more. Throw into the mix, the lack of critical thinking that is prevalent across economic strata, and you have this. People can't see through the media. People can't assess critical issues. They allow their passions to become inflamed. We were supposed to have evolved past this. We were supposed to be able to look at each situation individually and to see if it fit into a societal pattern, and determine what was the cause of it. We haven't. Our generation can dissect the hidden meanings of events on Game of Thrones and debate them ad nauseum. We dissect the true intentions of the Lannisters, or the Queen of Dragons, yet we can't see what the media is presenting to us. We merely repeat what we see and don't ask, "Why is this the way I am seeing it?" We don't seek the counter point to truly understand, to the best of our abilities. Nope, we rattle off what our news source shows, repeat it or fight it based off our limited critical thinking, and then dig ourselves into a trench. Now that we are in a trench, we don't know how to get out, b/c our parents have taught us that our opinion can never be wrong if we hold true to who we are. We are move valuable than society says we are. Now that we are adults, this position has only been reinforced by social media. We are the stars of our own shows, and any contrary opinion is quickly shot down by like minded "friends." The only way that we, as a society, rid ourselves of this virus is if we are willing to stop being infected and get off the teet of the media. IMO. A lot of this is true, however, I do not think people a dumber they just are smart differently. This generation now does not have to critically think or problem solve as previous generations have. if I need to fix something it is a Google away. I can choose from a plethora of misinformed, money grabbers or hate mongers, if I choose. Being an educator for over 40 years this generation of kids don't need the same basics as we did because of the technological environment we live in. They will be missing huge gaps to critcally think and problem solve. There is no wall to stop this, no gun law to stop this, no Bible thumping to stop this. It simply is valuing what others believe, think, and look like. The answer will not be judging and fearing others that are different from us, but truly understanding others and their differences. We have a L-O-O-O-N-N-NG way to go. Mostly because many think they do, but really don't.
July 8, 201610 yr What we need today are leaders not rabble rousers. We don't need dividers we need people to unite. We need people that want a culture that strives to come together rather than one that wants to rip us into sections. That was what Obama was supposed to do and he failed miserably.
July 8, 201610 yr Allowing hate speech like BLM, Black Panther Party, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton just rots the minds of those already close to breaking. I mean they glorify the killing of whites. Other than KKK I don't see any groups wanting blacks dead, a do don't even hear from KKK on news since they are so irrelevant. And I maybe wrong.

July 8, 201610 yr Here's my take. Dumber people are hearing what they want to hear. They ain't really listening. Well said.

You can't google an ability to understand interpersonal conflict. It has to be experienced and learned from. The insulation of so many of this group of 20 somethings has kept them many from experiencing this.
July 8, 201610 yr And this will probably sound old school (hard to believe, huh), but the de-emphasis of a liberal arts education is a major factor.
July 8, 201610 yr A lot of the problem began in early 1990s with meth and pain pills. The parents hooked on these drugs had their drug babies and it's what are adults now. Not to mention the parents who quit church and didn't take their kids to church to give them a sense of right or wrong and conviction. Drugs and absent from Church is a factor in this pathetic world we have now.
July 8, 201610 yr And this will probably sound old school (hard to believe, huh), but the de-emphasis of a liberal arts education is a major factor. ????? Has there ever been more liberal arts graduates ?
July 8, 201610 yr ????? Has there ever been more liberal arts graduates ? That I don't know. I do know that there are more people getting Business degrees than in any other field, and that it's been that way for the last 3 or 4 decades. Prior to that, the number 1 area was Education.
July 9, 201610 yr That I don't know. I do know that there are more people getting Business degrees than in any other field, and that it's been that way for the last 3 or 4 decades. Prior to that, the number 1 area was Education. Money grubbers....?
July 9, 201610 yr Author Money grubbers....? What was Mexi's quote? " Greed is the gas to the fire of hate."
July 9, 201610 yr There has to be a point where our fellow man outweighs the almighty dollar. Not sure we have leaders that support that. They too hungry !
July 9, 201610 yr I said this a year ago on here. We are too divided. Unless something changes we are headed down a road we do not want to travel as a nation. I just dont see anything changing, only getting worse. Just look at the fronts we are divided on. The leaders we have now have divided, and Trump/Clinton whichever, will only throw more fuel on the fire as all the sides involved will only say the other side is dividing us even more and wrong. Unless the good Lord intervenes we got some tough times ahead in the good ole USA.
