But this is one of those years where they can take advantage of the circumstances. Newport is going to be beatable' date=' but they have a couple of younger players that should make Newport a contender for the district 2017/2018. Highlands falls in a similar boat. I think they are on the way back up to being a district contender, especially with the class about to be sophomores. They are still going to be one year away. Dayton can beat both of them this year, as well as Bellevue. Now they could also go 0-for in this group as well (unlikely they lose to Bellevue twice but it could happen) as well as be significant underdogs to NCC. But if they can beat Bellevue and Newport/Highlands, and end up in the semifinal against Newport/Highlands, I think they have a puncher's chance. Would like to see them get a nice veteran coach who can immediately have them ready. A first-timer may not be able to squeeze everything out of this opportunity. Even if you find my analysis of the district a little pie-in-the-sky, I think we all can agree they have a legitimate shot to win the conference and may even be the favorite.[/quote'] pipe dream! Dayton/Bellevue is not going to compete with HHS or NewCath. A lot of folks are overlooking HHS in district. Trust me on that!

And let's not forget that Bellevue had some quality wins the last couple of years on their scale, Highlands being included. You cannot convince me that given a semifinal one-shot at Highlands that Dayton can't compete. Not saying they will win, but I wouldn't pick a blow out for the Birds.

What sophomore class is contributing to varsity this year other than Starkey? Wasn't Dayton senior heavy last year.

Dayton lost a few good players from last year. But they are returning Adrian Hall and Draven Garcia. Hall is one of the quickest players I have seen in awhile and can finish strong in traffic. Garcia has the ability to score big when he gets hot. They also have Sam Brewer who is one of the scrappier point guards you will find. They all did well in summer ball.

Will need help in the middle from some of the football guys. No predictions but we will see how it goes down.

I'm going to throw this out there. This is a tough hire, because not only do you have to have a guy with the knowledge of the game, but you have to have one that has the unique personality to be able to simultaneously have control of AND the respect of the players. Some schools you can't walk in with experience and the badge of coach and get the kids to play for you and IMO this is one of them. I just hope whoever they hire is the right fit for the school in those terms.

Great point ESPN. There is a certain psychology associated with athletics there, particularly in football. I guess lack of winning will do that to a program.

I'm very surprised by this, does anyone know anything at all that they would be willing to share? I really like Billy Rogg and thought he did a very good job the years he was there regardless of win/loss record.

Many coaches at smaller schools such as Dayton, and in particular Dayton, have done a "very good" job given the hand they have to play. It can never be about solely win/loss record at Dayton or a similar school. Very Good Job, and win/loss record simply don't go hand in hand in this instance. At a school like Dayton, every little positive is a win, whether it be competing for small conference titles, beating their rivals, playing well and progressing, or even having enough enrollment to have a true JV team separate from the V team. Everyone wants the W's, but realists understand the obstacles. Thus, I agree 110% with ESPNdeau above

You could not be more correct. I love listening to those "wise" folks who think coaching at a small, especially urban, school is just a matter of "working harder." The challenges at these schools go far beyond skill level or commitment to winning. I neither know, nor want to know what created this situation, I just know that during his time at Dayton Coach Rogg cared about and for his players and his program. At the very least he is to be commended for that. This is a tough gig and one that will require the right person in order to be successful. I hope they find that person and then I hope they can retain them.
