Sadly, John Wooden is dead, so he can't return to the school where his great coaching career started.

I actually hope that's who they give it to. He did a solid job with the JV last year, seems knowledgeable and is well like by the players and parents.

Was looking back at some records and Dayton hasn't played in a region tournament since 1970. I know they are in a very top-heavy district but here's hoping the new coach can break that spell soon!

They actually have some talent returning, particularly at the guard position. Lack of size and depth, as always, will be an issue.

But this is one of those years where they can take advantage of the circumstances. Newport is going to be beatable, but they have a couple of younger players that should make Newport a contender for the district 2017/2018. Highlands falls in a similar boat. I think they are on the way back up to being a district contender, especially with the class about to be sophomores. They are still going to be one year away. Dayton can beat both of them this year, as well as Bellevue. Now they could also go 0-for in this group as well (unlikely they lose to Bellevue twice but it could happen) as well as be significant underdogs to NCC. But if they can beat Bellevue and Newport/Highlands, and end up in the semifinal against Newport/Highlands, I think they have a puncher's chance. Would like to see them get a nice veteran coach who can immediately have them ready. A first-timer may not be able to squeeze everything out of this opportunity. Even if you find my analysis of the district a little pie-in-the-sky, I think we all can agree they have a legitimate shot to win the conference and may even be the favorite.

Based on my observations, you seem to right on the money se7ens. They got over the bellevue hump last season. Hopefully they do the same with Ludlow this upsoming season.
