They fill the place with nearly 10,000 folks on game night. That's a lot of money from the gate.

Article did not mention it, but a lot of these huge stadiums are shared by other schools. They may host several games on a weekend.

Yep, was going to mention this same thing and forgot. Heck I think some school districts in TX actually have 3 schools use the same facilities like this from other articles I have read.

If I were a local taxpayer they would have to show me that the school does not need the funds for ANYTHING else relating to infrastructure or academics OR that the board itself can give a strong ROI - which I doubt.

I am assuming Clyde you are talking strictly school tax dollars, and not money generated by athletics, booster clubs or private donations?

Correct. In the article I read the money to help pay for this scoreboard was from the school budget and not the athletics budget.

It kind of sounded that way, but I wasn't sure...if so as I said in my original post I would have a problem with it as well. But, usually these things are paid for privately with booster funds, donations, local sponsors, etc. Not sure about this one.

I always wonder how we get any coaches to stay here when you can go to Texas and make a living coaching HS Football w/o any other job.

Katy (suburb of Houston) that is building the $63 million stadium has 9 high schools and already has two stadiums. Sharing 9 high school schedules for two stadiums is ridiculous. Even sharing for three stadiums is ridiculous.

Plus, you forget that those tax payers want this and are the ones filling the stands on Friday nights.

The high school where I went now has 5 high schools using the stadium with the furthest having to drive about 20 minutes. Games are usually played Thursday - Saturday to allocate all the teams.

Here is a picture of it: Turner Stadium | Houston, Texas USA | Harris County - Houston Sports Authority (scroll about midway down).

Ho-hum...I still prefer the small local crowd atmosphere of most of KY's football games. Those big stadiums are neat and all, but if I want that, I'll go to a college or pro game. I like trees in the background, grill smoke rolling across the field, standing on the fence by the field, and dad's volunteering to work the chains.

I get that the kids want the "big time" stuff, but for me, I'm just fine with the experience we get here in "small time" football America.

I agree with you completely! We grow these young men up too fast now a days. Next step is big time middle school stadiums ....

Comparing what goes on here and what goes on in Texas is apples and oranges. Largest high schools in KY are in the Lexington area with a few topping 2,000 in the enrollment. In Texas, there are 15 schools with 4,000+. I've seen Somerset pretty full for local games and when the Ray Correll bowl was here with Southwestern and Pulaski. All 3 schools in this county wont equal some of the enrollment in 1 school in Texas.

The video board I am sure was paid for by booster dollars and it will pay for itself in the long run with ads and such. But let's say it's tax dollars...I bet there is a nice amount of tax revenue for local townships when games this size are hosted. As for me, zero issues with this.

I

It's the way of the world in Texas. Their education system stinks, but football is king.

I agree with Clyde!

You probably want to keep that on the down low.
