Pitch count

Featured Replies

He went one batter over the limit, let's not get carried away that it was a huge over the limit count.

Over is over right?

Several coaches did not coach in the game, did they not become eligible to coach? Will they coach the rest of the games this season

Who are "several coaches"? Without being there and having no knowledge of the program your questions can't be answered. More detail is better here on BGP.

The head coach was suspended by the school and was out of the game

As was widely reported that he would be.

Your post said "several coaches" though and the head coach is just one...

Pitchers dad was one and I did not know the other one but they were not in the.dug out area

The problem with believing in the stated logic by Nolan Ryan and Tommy John (who, by the way, are not scientists nor doctors) is that PLENTY of pitchers from their day had elbow issues. Hello, Gary Nolan.

Why are we listening to players who , frankly, don't know much?

You can question how a particular number was used for the pitch count limit but history is showing that pitchers are throwing harder AND for much longer every year (ie 8 to 12 months per year). Those two seem to be the real issue.

Throwing harder, yes, but how do you know for certain that many people are throwing 8-12 months a year? I could say that I am, doesn't mean I actually am. Pitch counts at a young age I get, but once you hit college and beyond, I disagree. And as far as saying that Ryan and John don't know much is a bit far fetched.

The top pitchers ARE throwing nearly year round. Extended youth season, fall baseball etc for teenagers and other youth, with many playing 70 or more games with seasons starting in February and running through late October (or longer in warm weather states). Most top college pitchers (the guys getting drafted) are playing in one of the many elite leagues around the country (like the Cape Cod league), and then taking a couple of weeks off in late summer before firing back up for college fall ball which runs until Novemeber. Then the process starts all over again in January.

So what medical background do both have?

But are they taking care of themselves? That is where I believe the issues are lying. They very well may be throwing year round, but if they aren't taking care of their bodies or arms then it doesn't help. I've just never been a fan of being told or telling someone, they get this many pitches.

They don't have to have a medical background. They both have done, at the highest level. To question their knowledge of pitching is funny. Nolan is one of the greatest of all time, I'm sure he knows more than both you and I.

The doctors say the fact they are throwing year round is THE issue.

He certainly knows how to set up a batter , how to hit the corner with a fastball, and how to brush someone back. That doesn't tell us anything about his knowledge of kinetic energy and the impact on the UCL.
