Pitch count

Featured Replies

But are they taking care of themselves? That is where I believe the issues are lying. They very well may be throwing year round, but if they aren't taking care of their bodies or arms then it doesn't help. I've just never been a fan of being told or telling someone, they get this many pitches.

At the college level and above, I'd almost certainly say yes. And even at the high school level and elite youth level, you see kids and coaches that are much more knowledgeable and aware of how to take care of arms than in years past. And much of that is related to tracking pitch counts. Arm problems develop once fatigue sets in. And while fatigue may vary for each pitcher, it still gives a good idea of when a pitcher is approaching/entering that danger zone. Pitch counts have been around for a long time at the college and pro level. We were tracking pitch counts when I played D1 ball in the late 80's/early 90's, and they were a factor in how long a pitcher should go.

The doctors say the fact they are throwing year round is THE issue.
Related to Nate Jones, even he doesn't touch a baseball for a while during the winter. If he doesn't, why should high schoolers?
