Just sitting here I've came up with a dozen questions off of the top of my head, any of which could sway me to one side or the other of the argument...depending on how the program was administered.
May 25, 201610 yr What happens when a teacher is the nut job and kills a class room full of kids? That could happen any day. I'm actually shocked that none of the school shootings that I have ever read or heard about have been committed by teachers. Not that teachers are bad people but there are people that can do very bad things in all walks of life.

May 25, 201610 yr Guns could be in alarmed safe. As soon as one is opened admins are alerted and leos dispatched. Could have a panic release by admins also to allow instant access in case of dire emergency. We're not going down the road of teachers harming students. One in a hundred million chance. Much more likley to face an outside threat or a crazy student.

Can you find one incident ever of a teacher shooting students? I can't recall that ever happening.

It's a can of worms we don't need to open. Has a teacher ever gone off? I don't recall it. Every incident I remember came from students or external sources. Armed teachers would have helped. Since a gun free zone would not help if a teacher goes off I'd rather address the actual incidents we've faced rather than the more remote what if scenario.

Then I remembered how things happen when they get to the school level to save money: 5 rather than 15 designated teachers could bring THEIR gun to train one day all year for 3 hours ( the rest of the day would be looking at test data) and the safes were too expensive, so teachers need to keep their guns in their locked desk.

No for this to happen the teachers do not bring their own weapons, they are already there. There is plenty of money for this to happen. What's the price on a childs life? We can go into the bureaucratic waste of money at the school board level all day. Things can be more efficient and the funds can be found. Once installed the cost to keep the program is really minimal. Some people will say if a gun is on campus bad things could happen. That's where the ideological difference is. I say if guns are on campus bad things are less likely to happen or be minimalized. In the past we have found that in the worst of situtations unarmed teachers have fought and given their lives trying to protect students. Let's give them the ability to actually protect the kids and themselves. They will do the right thing.

Doesn't mean there isn't the possibility of it happening though. I would almost guarantee that if teachers were to be armed, at some point there would be at least a couple of incidents that occur. They'd obviously be incredibly few and far between, but it'll happen because there are always irresponsible people in any profession.
May 25, 201610 yr Having guns available for teacher in the event of a active shooter situation, means that guns will be available for any situation. Do they get the guns out to break up fights? Guns add another level of decision making that all teachers may or may not be qualified to handle. It's tough being a teacher. So in addition we want them to be certified and skilled in handling firearms?? 4 or 5 hours of training is not going to prepare a teacher to be able to handle a mass shooting situation, or really any situation that would require a gun. We have well trained Law Enforcement folks who make bad decisions with firearms. What's going to happen when we arm teachers?
