I did not mean to sound critical of you, xyience. I understood what you were saying and I am sure that almost everybody else who follows Kentucky high school football did as well. Johnson Central fans get reminded of past Golden Eagles' teams' playoff performances after nearly every impressive regular season win. We would be fools to claim a non-existent state football title. Some people just like to rain on other people's parades I guess.

BTW, thanks for the updates Friday night. Nice job.:thumb:

I have always kept up with bgp, but never had an account. I finally broke down and paid the $15.00, It was so worth it. But that might be the last update you get from me this season, b/c I will be at the rest of the games. I may get JC to set me up a computer at the field so I can do updates there.

If he had a problem with the previously, I don't understand why the coach before Matney took over had no problem exchanging tapes and no problem in sending the media a quick synopsis of his team (as well as the roster) for their district breakdowns. Les does a good job at covering the kids and often, doing the CVB program for all the teams in the bowl games. I know that coaches are busy, but why can every other coach do these little things?

Don't get me wrong, .. Matney is a GREAT coach and his track record speaks for itself. Most teams would LOVE to have a coach with his knowledge, dedication and ability to turn a program around. However, there were posts on BGP about his refusal to trade tapes the past 2 years, so none of this should be a big surprise.

BTW, when Duncum was still at N Laurel, Matney asked him personally stating that they REALLY wanted to get into the CVB bowl game. Duncum obliged him as JCHS was a program on the rise and a mountain school even though Matney had refused to exchange tapes with him just weeks before. However, basically not cooperating at all with the bowl organizers and the local media who all worked their butts off to put on this bowl game every year the past 6 seasons, is a slap in the face. But I guess when they don't get invited back, Matney can just say that even more teams are 'ducking' the Eagles. It won't be true, but I guess perception is in the eye of the beholder.

This whole converstion about tapes , media guides etc. is just plain stupid. Was Johnson Central invited to play in the the CVB because they were a good up and coming football program that would provide a competitive game or were they invited to come and participate in a dog and pony show and just lie down for one of the Laurel County Schools? It seems to me that the first scenerio about being a competitive participant was more than fulfilled by Matney and Johnson Central. That was his duty and his only duty. In fact he may have obliged a little too much in that department, looking at the score for some of you Laurel Countians.

Matney's job is to win football games at Johnson Central within the rules of the game and nothing else more. He was not hired by the Johnson County School Board to have his teams be a participant in a traveling tent carnival. Do you all want to play football down there or are you all now a part of Barnum and Bailey? If Johnson Central is supposed to come and only be the bearded lady or the man with two noses in the event, I could care less if they are ever invited back.

I sometimes listen to the games over the phone and may be able to do post some updates myself. I appreciated your updates, but typing on a laptop while trying to watch a game just doesn't seem right. Enjoy the games and leave the laptop at home.

Does anybody know if Johnson Central signed a 2 year contract with north laurel? If so, NL will have to travel to Johnson County. I dont know about anybody else, but I am tired of playing the Laurel county schools.

I can multitask. But I see what you are saying, and I'll take your advise.

If JC had been around before 1957, maybe we could lay claim to a state championship. Heck, none of our county schools even had football before consolidating into JCHS.

JC has 2 state titles. 1 in golf, Amiee Cantrell Webb in 1991 and 1 in wrestling 103 lbs. weight class, Bobby Vanhoose in 1991. There is no reason that a school that size and has been around since 1968 has only 2 state titles. But things are finally starting to shape up around eagleville.

Great post!

If that’s a fact he obliviously didn't need any film on the opposing team. The point I'm trying to make is if a coach is busting his butt scouting other teams during scrimmages or during the regular season and keeping his team prepared while his counter part is setting at home waiting for his scouting tape that’s provided by his opponent why would he trade. If a coach doesn't think he needs film on the other team why would he trade? To help the other coach out? Come on guys that’s crazy. Personally I think all this crying about film trading or the lack there of is absurd.

I was commenting about the last time NL and JCHS met in district play (2004) when Matney refused to exchange tapes. Maybe it would have helped as NL won that game. Since they did exchange tapes this season, JCHS must have thought that this wasn't such a bad idea. ;)

As far as why coaches would trade tapes if they felt they didn't need it along with the comments about 'crying about film trading' is quite simply put that HS coaches are pressed for time and it was always an agreement in the district (as it is with most districts) that the teams exchange tapes. It is a way to save the coaches time and headaches in their scouting by a tape trade. Maybe JCHS has the available time, money and scouts to do all their scouting for them, but most schools and coaching staffs spend their time in the classrooms, on the field, or in preparing gameplans. It has been a 'gentlemans' agreement between most all coaches to trade tapes. Holmes had a much longer drive than JCHS, yet they have had no problem in trading tapes the past few seasons for the CVB or sending a rep for media day or even sending a roster. No team in the 6 year history of the CVB has ever had a problem with it. I was just curious as to why a program would want to be part of a bowl game but have no desire to help the bowl staff who do all the work and put it together develop an accurate program or media information for all those interested in seeing these kids play football.

Look, I have nothing but respect for the JCHS program, especially the kids. My first experience ever with JCHS was in 2003 when NL played JCHS for the first time when the Eagles joined 4A R4D7. Ron Blume came onto the NL bus to seek out a NL player and compliment him on a great game. That showed me nothing but class and I remember thinking how remarkable that was for a kid to do. I still haven't lost that memory which was my first impression of JCHS. But the more I read all the posts from JCHS and see the new policy of isolationism, ... I am beginning to see my view become somewhat tainted. However, I still have total respect for the talent and efforts that their kids put forth. They are the ones who earn the victories and deserve all the success they achieve!

If it is the long drive, I concur with that being the reasoning. I made the trek to Johnson County in 2003 and it is most definitely a haul and a very late night.

Already tired of playing the Laurel County schools after 1 win? My scorebook says that JCHS was 0-2 in 2003, 0-2 in 2004, 0-1 in 2005 and 1-0 in 2006. So since you have finally gotten a win over a Laurel County school for the first time in around 6 years (1-5 since 2003), you are tired of playing them?

To answer the other poster who was pondering why JCHS was invited to play in the CVB? Greg Duncum was asked by Coach Matney if JCHS could get into the bowl game. Duncum's exact comment to me about it was 'They are an up and coming program with a very solid coaching staff and with the talented players they have, they will be solid competition for both North and South.' They were not just looking for a 'dog to just lie down' as WYMT wanted at least 1 good mountain team in the bowl game besides the Laurel County teams to service their viewing area. JCHS has proven with the close loss to SL last year and their very impressive win over NL that they were exactly what most thought they would be, an up and coming program. If they were looking for a 'dog', there are plenty of mountain schools that they could have invited who were actually banging on the schools doors the past few years to get in the bowl game and see their kids play on WYMT, but that isn't who they picked.

I agree 110% that the line has to step up. But I have seen this North Laurel line get worse and worse the past 2 seasons. I am curious if they have a different line coach the past few seasons or if they are trying different techniques or blocking schemes. They sure haven't worked so far. In 2 scrimmages and 1 game, the varsity offense has yet to find the end zone. The offense was inconsistent last year, but this year it just looks ragged. Their technique is bad, nobody is staying with their blocks, even when they get out on their blocks.

I agree the offensive line for NL didn't play well last but you can't pin last nights offensive troubles all on them, it was a total team effort. I thought the quarterback play was much better than last year, no turnovers.

This was game was a good game for Johnson Central, but I'm not gonna keep on talking about something that is over with. Good luck to North Laurel the rest of the seaon.

Excellent post Firebird. Been missing hearing from you. I hope all is well in your end of the world?

North's QB play or JCHS? I think Ratliff will be a dandy one for JCHS as the season progresses. I know they hated to lose Music, but I think Ratliff may become a better passer than Music was. But Music was a leader. I was impressed with the Frosh for NL, Wardrup. After a few shaky throws early, he really started to gain confidence and he was by far the most athletic of the 3 who played. NL lost some of their games last year when they had very few or no turnovers from the QB position (the Mercer and GRC games immediately come to mind). And there was at least one TO on the NL QB's (a fumble fallen on for a JCHS TD). But, it is also about the ability to make plays with their legs as well and the first 2 QB's didn't show the ability to run that this offense needs to have to be successful. They don't have much size, so they need to use their legs to get themselves some space and to avoid the rush. Wardrup did show the ability to move around and seemed to have very good athleticism, especially for a freshmen (he also seems to have decent size as well). They have to have more weapons than just Asher and Maggard. I think Wardrup, given time to develop, will be able to do just that with his arm as well as his legs. The one thing I noticed was that too many of the NL runners seemed to be looking for a place to land instead of fighting for more yards. Maggard looked hardnosed in his few touches and continued to go north/south and kept his legs pumping. Asher was fighting for yards most times when he was able to get moving and not get hit in the backfield.

You are right, it was a team effort and JCHS was the better team. NL got very lucky with a few dropped INT's and a few fumbles that were either fallen on by a NL player or were ruled down when the JCHS players actually came up with the ball. They have to play better team ball with everyone doing their job.

On a positive note, I thought not only did Maggard play well, but JR Cam Cornett showed some nice hands as did Shiloh Robinson on a nice catch from Wardrup in the 4th quarter. There are some players there if they can just pull together.
