Racism or not?

Barry Bonds is calling racism on a group of white teenagers singing along with a rap.

Barry Bonds Calls Racism On Daughter's Private School ... White Kids Rapping N-Word | TMZ.com

Barry Bonds is outraged over a video of several white kids who attend his daughter's fancy Brentwood private school using the n-word while rapping along with a popular song.

The 26-second clip -- posted by Brentwood Students Against Racism -- shows several young white teens singing along to A$AP Ferg's, "Dump Dump".

The video got to Barry, whose daughter, Aisha, attends Brentwood School ($37,000 a year) -- and he tweeted, "I am sad that i had to see this at my daughters school. #Racism #Fixit #Suspension ."

He's not the only one calling for action ... a Change.org petition was launched and already has more than 400 signatures. Not everyone is on the warpath -- a student who wished to remain anonymous spoke with NBC4 and condemned using the n-word, but said the kids should NOT be punished.

"It's a small segment of the school that is making a big fuss over nothing ... Some of the extreme activists on campus are calling singing along to a rap song a 'hate crime' or 'hate speech' but that is a load of hogwash."

The school has called the lyrics “offensive and inconsistent with our core values." School officials add, "We are investigating this insensitive behavior, will address the situation directly, and will respond seriously.”

How can that be racism. They are only singing the lyrics, which I guess is allowed and meant for anyone.

The word gets used incorrectly in many cases.

Key factor for me in determining whether something is racist is intent. A kid quoting a lyric doesn't seem to have an intent to demean when the quote from a song is not mean to demean.

If the only reason the kids are singing the song is the n-word then you start getting into a racist area.

Sidenote: Hip-hop's popularity in the white community likely has made many young whites insensitive to the word. They fail to understand the reaction by many blacks who abhor the word.

And before someone starts yelling "double standard" and linking that to hip hop or blacks in general, YES, there is a double standard and that's fine. We all have double standards in our lives. "I can call my brother a moron but if you do....." Happens all the time.

INTENT is the key.

What if the song is racist? What if the song is sung by drunk ,white frat boys on a bus and the lyrics involve "hang 'em by a tree?"

There is a line.

Topical for this thread.

Actress Blake Lively was photographed at some event . Picture from the front and a picture from the back. She tweeted/IG'd/whatever the two photos with the line "LA face Oakland booty."

She is being accused of being racist. Is it?

How 'bout don't use the word, period? This baloney where one person can use it and it's OK but if a different person uses it it's not OK, that's NUTS! And this incident is the perfect example. If it was wrong in 1865, 1930, 1960, it's wrong in 2016.

And if a person uses the word in his/her profession regularly, they shouldn't be surprised when it gets used toward them in my opinion.

Is the song you refer too on the radio or an album that has been sold?

Or

Is the song just a made up song by someone?

Is it racist to sing you get a rope, I get a tree, we'll hang us a referee if the ref is white? And how about if he is black?

My response was to your point that it was OK because it was from a song. My example seems to be one that would refute that. All songs are "made up" but I do believe the one I referenced is an old song of some sort.

As to your referee/tree question , again, I say intent matters.

With that said, I would say it's always prudent to NOT use that chant with a black official. Makes life simpler.

Was about to start a thread on that.

I don't think that's racist. She quoted sir-mix-alot

Agreed.

Barry Bonds is an idiot if that's the only problem he has with that song. Every word I heard was offensive!

Glorification of crap, breeds more glorification of crap.

Agreed.

I think people are taking this cultural appropriation a little to far now. People confuse something that is a detriment to anyone of an opposite race appreciating something they call their own.

No. White girls from Oakland have fatties too. :lol2:

Bonds is reaching here. It's not racist. As Clizzy said, it's all about intent.
