If he has never started a game (other than a fill in start) how would he be considered a starter. He may blow his knee out tomorrow and never play another down. Would he be considered a starter. I guess he could be considered a future starter?

 

Andrew Luck was he not considered the starting qb after he was drafted once they released Manning? Even though he never played a game? The Bengals didn't really attempt to sign Nelson back because they were ready to go young and have Williams start. Then they just gave him this extension which is a starter money. So yes you can consider him the starting safety because as of this moment he is a starter and is the plan for him to start. Just like it was the plan for Luck to start.

He's a starter now for sure. Hope he earns that cash.

He is the projected starter and if he plays average this is a good deal for both parties. If he outperforms his expected value, then obviously the Bengals win. If he goes in the tank, the Bengals lose no matter the guaranteed money, which is probably half that.
