Dayton Basketball's Steve McElvene Dies Aged 20

Fort Wayne, Ind. native was the starting center last season for the Flyers and was expected to start again next season. Cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) the expected cause.

 

Set a UD freshman record for blocks.

 

He was just 20 years old.

As someone with heart issues, this is my greatest fear. Of course, I'm probably less likely to have it happen, as I'm monitored annually, but the fear is definitely still there.

Reminds me of the kid from USI who collapsed and died during a game with Kentucky Wesleyan back in 2010 from an enlarged heart.

The first athlete I remember diagnosed with this ailment was Hank Gathers. Prayers to this young man's family and for a way to diagnose this ailment in time to prevent this tragedy from happening in the future. Shame how little progress there has been on this issue in 30 years.
