Surnames you associate with a specific high school

Featured Replies

It is funny how a specific surname gets associated with high school. The most obvious one by far in NKY is the Pangallo name with Newport Catholic. What other high schools have a family surname that when you hear it you just think of that high school? A couple of other NKY schools that came to my mind are:

Silver Grove: Pelle

Campbell County: Franzen (Jolly would be another, but feels like there were less of them)

Bellevue: Swope maybe or Leopold

Holmes: Engelmon or Commodore

Holy Cross: Arlinghaus or Trame

Brossart: Kramer

Can anyone think of any others?

Kramer and/or Kremer - Campbell Co.

Abner & Shields - Highlands

When I moved to NKY in 2006, the first thing I noticed was that everyone was related.

What would be most common St. Henry surname - Vieth maybe?

Maysville/Mason County - Lofton and Myrick.

Guidugli - Highlands

Slusher - Beechwood

Atkins - Newport

There was only 1 family of Guidugli's with 3 boys at Highlands. I think there are other stronger surnames associated with Highlands. Also with all due respect to John Atkins who is Mr. Newport and his son, I am not sure there have been enough Atkins over the years to cement that surname with Newport. Just my 2 cents.

I may be younger than you, but those are the names that I can remember hearing as I was growing up. You always heard about a Guidugli of some sort Whether it was Gino, Jeff, Ben or Tony. As for the Atkins name, I had also heard of Rick who was apparently a pretty good baseballer from my understanding. But you may know more than I.

That brings us to an interesting clarification. Are we talking over generations at a school, or one group going through?

The Donnelly clan at NewCath is one where there are a ton of good to great athletes, but they were all born to the daughters (hence the different last names). You have the Smiths, Kues, Mausharts, and Donnelly all together. That's '00-'15 of football players who coincide, and it isn't coincidentally, with NewCath's greatest stretch of football.

When I hear the name Guidugli, I think Newport Central Catholic.

I don't know if I thought about it that much, but good point about the moms.

The Schlarman siblings had an outstanding run at Highlands in the 80's through early 90's.

That definitely brings up a valid point.
