May 5, 201610 yr Author Miggy is an interesting selection. My quick analysis: He is currently 33 but signed to play through 2023 (another 7 seasons). Currently, he has 2,359 hits (1,641 to reach 4K). His "162 game average" is 195 hits. By my calculations, that means he needs another 8 1/2 seasons (including this season) to reach 4K. So, if he plays out his entire contract at the same level, he might have a shot. Based on his averages, he would be at roughly 3,880 hits after the 2023 season. If he got to that point, I don't see how he doesn't come back for at least one more season as a DH to get there. Of course, all this is assuming he stays healthy and is able to continue to play at the insane level has has so far.

Altuve turns 26 tomorrow and has 864 hits. His 162 game average is 201 (including 225 hits in '14 & 200 in '15). If he averages 201 hits for the rest of his career, he would need to play over 15.5 seasons -- including this season. Basically, he'd have to average 200+ hits until he's 41. Just goes to show you how awesome 4,000 hit truly is...

Another, that everyone seems to forget how young he is, is Starlin Castro. He turned 26 just before the season began and is already at 1,018 career hits. His averages aren't as good as Altuve's though.
May 5, 201610 yr Ichiro could have done it EASILY had he been in MLB his entire career. Has over 4200 hits between his Japanese career and his MLB career.
May 5, 201610 yr Author Ichiro could have done it EASILY had he been in MLB his entire career. Has over 4200 hits between his Japanese career and his MLB career. Absolutely. It's a shame we'll never get to see where he could've gotten to had he been over here his whole career. Would've loved watching him chase and break Rose's record. He's only 32 hits away from 4,257 for his entire professional career.
May 5, 201610 yr Ichiro could have done it EASILY had he been in MLB his entire career. Has over 4200 hits between his Japanese career and his MLB career. So you think the pitching in Japan is comparable to that of MLB?
May 5, 201610 yr Author So you think the pitching in Japan is comparable to that of MLB? Doesn't seem to have impacted Ichiro any. Plus you got to factor in that they play 18 less games a season in Japan.
May 5, 201610 yr Doesn't seem to have impacted Ichiro any. (I would think Major League pitching would be a little tougher to hit than Japanese League) Plus you got to factor in that they play 18 less games a season in Japan. (Good point. I had forgotten their season is a tad shorter)
May 5, 201610 yr Was it '76 that they swept the playoffs and the series? Of course, I am referring to a simple sweep of a regular season series.
May 7, 201610 yr I was his hitting coach. Papa, I also heard a rumor that you were Cy Young's pitching coach. Can you confirm or deny that??
May 9, 201610 yr Ace of MLB Stats @theaceofspaeder Through 700 career games #Astros Jose Altuve 870 hits & .306/.346/.425 #Reds Pete Rose 835 hits & .296/.352/.412 Altuve 104 days younger.
May 9, 201610 yr Rose was asked a while back about combining Ichiro's hits from both leagues. He mentioned he has 400+ hits from the minor leagues that should be added if you want to go that route
