The funny thing is . . . . I think that there is actually a pretty interesting message in there . . . . .

Finally -someone gets it......

My Gosh- do you actually have to spell things out on here.

OKAY lets try again::::::::

WOW, seven or eleven transfers in to Belfry this year from West Virginia. That part of West Virginia must be an education nightmare and should be shut down by the state of WV. If the school systems are so bad, they should be reviewed by the Board of Education and mandations should be handed out.

These young men are not getting the proper education where they live.

OH YEA !!! How many girls transfered into Belfry (not playing sports) this year or does West Virginia just withhold the education rights to BOYS.

Finally -someone gets it......

My Gosh- do you actually have to spell things out on here.

Actually the state of West Virginia has in recent years taken over the Mingo County Board of Education. Twice. It might have been turned over to the local board recently, I'm not sure. So yes, it's possible the quality of education is lacking. Consolidation of high schools has been a big topic in the county also. It seems many don't want that. As for number of girls, I don't know.

YES ME TOO!!! Looks like the same bunch of kids that we have watched grow up and play ball in grade school/feeder schools and move right on into their spots at BHS!! Course if you dont live here and know these people you wouldn't realize that these kids belong at Belfry now would you!! Sometimes post just dont even deserve a reply

That's why I'm partial to the moniker "Greater Williamson All-Stars"... ;)

But seriously, this is old news. It's been going on a LONG time. Some years its fewer, some more. FWIW, neither of Belfry's '03 and '04 outstanding RB's were born in Kentucky.

It's just one of those things that seems to become -more- important when you expect YOUR home team to be pretty good yet you know they still have to get by them in the playoffs. If anyone knows that feeling, Prestonsburg fans do.

Trouble is, there's really no fix as long as out-of-state students are allowed to transfer into Kentucky schools without the level of oversight in-state transfers garner.

So practically...all one can do is root for your team and hope it can overcome the competitive disadvantage - like the Red Devils did last year, btw.

:bunny:

Competitive disadvantage  And it even goes back as far as birth records?

I hate to even bite on this, but how many students would you guess live outside the city limits of Prestonsburg and attend school there rather than in one of the county schools?

And since I am already in the mire, so to speak, transfers are all under the same microscope, whether they be from out of state, out of district or across town.

I was at the game tonight and can say with 100% that no player who saw action for Belfry was not on the roster last season. Maybe 11 kids transfered into the school, but none of them saw action for the Pirates tonight.

Another note. The state of Mingo Co (not just Williamson) schools is VERY POOR. Its a reality. Now, Im not going to sit here and say that a kid who likes football comes to Belfry because they have a good math teacher, but many students who do enroll in Pike Co. schools are forced by their parents for educational and safety purposes. (Mingo Co. schools are a tuff environment in which to grow up)

Again, same kids we saw last year. I haven't heard of any transfers this season, but If there were new faces from WV, they were freshmen who didn't play tonight.

Toots... I'm not throwing stones here, but I think there's something you don't understand.

Prestonsburg High IS "one of the county schools". It is NOT a city independent (ala Pikeville and Paintsville). P-burg High's district is Prestonsburg (of course), AND... Auxier, Middle Creek, Allen (some choose Betsy Layne), and Martin (though most go to Allen Central).

Belfry High School was built to accomodate the students in northeastern Pike Co.. Since Belfry High has historically been slightly larger than P-burg, I assume there's at least as many students in Belfry's school district as in Prestonsburg's. NOW... add the students coming from across the river..

See what I mean by "competitive advantage"? Would it make a difference if I said potential competitive advantage ?

I'm not arguing the right and wrong as to "why" WV families send their children across the river, only that IT HAPPENS.

Yes its getting very old and what does it matter where your born?? Does everyone go to school where they were born?? I KNOW one of the kids your talking about played ball IN KY BEFORE high school  gees

Do these people out there realize how close Belfry and Williamson are?? How small this area is?? The way they act like Belfry recruits is almost funny LOL you could walk from one school to the other! Besides that I've watched most of these kids grow up in KY schools

btw--by saying ive watched "most" of them, doesnt mean that the rest of them went to wv in grade school it just means that I didn't know them or my kids didnt know them

I was born in Virginia..does that mean I have to give back my Belfry Diploma???:sssh: ;)

You are right, I didn't understand the dynamics of Pburg's district and I made a bad assumption. I should have listened to the voice telling me to stay out of this one. ;)

And you are right, it happens. It isn't illegal or wrong, it just is what it is.

But I'm not sure the relatively small number of kids from WV actually create a competitive advantage in sports. I think it is just the 2 or 3 high profile players that got a LOT of attention seem to give that impression.

And since I am already in the mire, so to speak, transfers are all under the same microscope, whether they be from out of state, out of district or across town.

By the rules, I agree, it's supposed to be that way. But that most certainly is not what I've seen over a number of years here and elsewhere.
