Petrino Contract Extended

Featured Replies

ESPN is reporting Petrino has been extended 7 yrs. at $30.6M. Thoughts? Has kept his nose clean since returning and the performance on the field and in recruiting has been very good.

Thanks says it will be about $4.9M per year.

He was extended? For who?

My question would be why, considering his buyout clause?

Were they worried about losing him? If not, then this is a big ole thank you for what you've done so far.

I didn't get that at first. Then I did. Then I laughed out loud at my desk.

They are not worried about losing him. They are showing their continued commitment to Petrino and the football program. This makes him the 3rd highest paid coach in the ACC (behind Jimbo and Dabo) and 12th in the country. Louisville is no longer a "stepping stone" job, and Jurich and Co. are committed to showing that.

For anybody asking why the extenstion... For reference, Mark Stoops was making more money than Petrino before this raise. Why has he gotten the extensions he has?

I heard $4.35 last night.

Don't think you can say it is no longet a stepping stone job and use Pertrino as an example. You all didn't think it was a stepping stone for Strong and he left. You all won't truly know what coaches think of UL until the next Coach after Petrino. You all are pretty safe with him because he has already left once, ruined his nfl reputation, ruin his chance at top jobs for his Arkansas doings. So I am sure he is thankful that he was able to get back to a job like Louisville.

So you all are safe with him because he won't leave again. The true test would be to see what the next Coach after him does if he is successful. Until then you all can act and say it's not a stepping stone job anymore, but really won't have anything to back it up until another Coach comes in and proves they will stay and turn down top jobs. Petrino staying is a rare exception because of his past and not because people don't think it's a stepping stone job anymore.

It's not a stepping stone job because they have shown they are willing to pay a coach big boy money. It's not a stepping stone job because Louisville has some of the best facilities in the country, and they will only be better when the expansion is done in the next 2-3 years. It's not a stepping stone job because UofL is finally in a respectable football league.

You can keep sipping on your haterade if it makes you feel better. Louisville is not the same job it was 10 years ago. The current coach doesn't have anything to do with whether or not Louisville is a stepping stone.

Well it's hard to believe you ul fans when you say this because you all said thing about Strong and how he wouldn't leave and you all would be able to match whatever another school offers and so he won't leave but at the end of the day he still did.

It is still in deed a stepping stone job. But I will say this it's a stone people are more willing to stand on longer until they have a premiere job they can get. It's still not the end destination job most coaches want. It's a not a job where when people get this job they say ok I am where I need to be and won't ever look elsewhere again. Imo a school is a stepping stone job if someone doesn't see it as their ideal end destination and still would want better. If a toperson football school has an opening a ul Coach would leave just like strong. But as I said UL is at least at a point where only a top football job would get a coach to leave.

It's hard to put much stock in a UK fan's football, and football business "expertise" . :D

Lets see Petrino left UL for the NFL. Strong who UL said no way he would leave left for Texas. You all are telling me that whover the next Coach is after Petrino won't leave for an NFL job if offered, or if a top well known football school with a history offers?

If you all say no, then you all are as delusional as some of my fellow UK fans you all get on. At the end of the day UL is a job any up and coming Coach wants but is still not their end destination job they want and would still leave if they have a chance to get that end destination job. Just like Petrino thought he was doing the first time and why Strong left too. I'm sorry UL fans but that has not changed. Petrino will stay this time but don't expect your next Coach to if he is successful and can get a top job or nfl job.

Who said there was no way Strong would leave for Texas?
