Football is going to 6 divisions, will Basketball now think about something like this

Featured Replies

Just wondering what everyone thinks about basketball maybe going to 3 or 4 different size schools, and having 3 or 4 state tourneys. A lot of other states do it and it works out great. I know our sweet 16 is the best tourney around, but just wondering with the change in football to an addtional 2 more state champs and are getting almost 90% of the teams in the tourney, will they try and do this for basketball to try and get more teams to the tourney. More teams mean more money at the gates!

I hope not...it would ruin KY basketball IMO.

A horrible idea ... even worse than six football classes.

Nope....too much $$$ in the Sweet 16.

LBBC is correct, you can't kill the golden goose. I for one, would hate to see the Sweet Sixteen change.

Not saying I wouldn't want to see it changed, just saying it won't because of the $$$$$.

I for one think a change would be great for the kids, which these things are supposed to be about.

It's great for us to give more kids opportunities in so many sports but boys/girls basketball, they don't need those opportunities because of tradition? Doesn't wash for me.

If it is good to give more kids opportunities in other sports, than it is good for basketball. I don't buy the argument that because a bunch of adults would not like it changing that we can't change it. It is supposed to be about the kids and not the adults.

But that's the teacher in me coming out. I don't give a darn about tradition, if a kid is going to benefit.

I don't get this argument. Why can't it be like baseball where they have 8 teams but make it two tournaments? One for small schools, one for big schools. You still get 16 teams, you have a small school session and a large school session. It doesn't sound difficult. I'm sorry, I just don't think because "we've always done it that way" necessarily means it's right.

I agree. Tradition does not equate to the best way or right way. If that was true, I would be looking for a Sears & Roebuck catalog to take to the outhouse.;):D

We had a thread on here many moons ago in the P & P debate. The KHSAA indicated that a very significant portion of the funds they have come from the Sweet 16. If I remember right, much more so than the football championship games.

It is scary to mess with your sacred financial cow.

The class system works very well in Ohio and West Virginia and it doesn't appear that there is a loss of revenue. Holding onto tradition is good but, in this case, a mistake. If we can have six classes in football, surely two or three in basketball, where there are many more schools participating, makes sense.

As soonas you break it up into 2 classes, you will have the smaller schools in both classes crying "no fair we're to small, make more classes so its fair" Waaaaaah

As soon as you break it into multiple classes, you will have traditional powers, crying "you've watered down our championships and they mean so much more less to our fragile identity and ego." WAAAAAAAAH

How do you figure? The small football schools aren't the one's complaining about four classes. Shoot, I don't hear that much whining now with one class.

As soon as you water it down, you will have the crowds stop coming. I don't want to water down the Sixteen Sweet, but I do think the All "A" is great for the small schools, but even there, I have read some complaining about some of the small schools being too big.

LBBC what are the crowds in the All "A" running? Are they averaging around 12/16 thousand per sessions for the All "A", and not just for the championship game?

I hate that it is all about money, but if you want to have Cross Country, Track, Swimming, Golf, etc. State Championship, you need somehow to pay for all this, and the Sweet Sixteen does pay for all of this. If the tradition changes, will you guarantee to the KHSAA the money to continue all they do for the other non revenue sports for both the boys and especially the girls?

I think it would be a tremendous boost to the waning interest in Kentucky High School Basketball. An even better idea would be 6 State Champions with a Champions Tourney after the divisional championships. I would give the !A and 2A teams a bye in the first round.

6A VS 5A-- winner versus 2A---->

Champ

4A VS 3A-- winner versus 1A---->

This format would bring about a complete resurgance in Kentucky Basketball.
