State Tourney attendance lowest in years

Featured Replies

I wish we(Buckhorn) had performed a little better, but I think our crowd did their part, at least

Got to see the opening session this year and your crowd (again) was tops. Last time(s) you guys were there, we were broadcasting the entire tournament...and both times you brought plenty of fans.

The Commish can say what he wants, but there is no doubt in my mind that the Sunday finals has affected the attendance. Unless your two teams are in the finals you just aren't going to get many casual fans to stick around and buy a hotel room to watch the next day. They need to go back to a Saturday finals.

The other thing is that the crowd that used to come watch every year has gotten up there in years. I know my dad just can't do the multiple days any more. We try to get to one session now that we think will have the best games just so he can say he went.

Some of the drop in attendance is from the new "Redbook" rules dealing with school finances. The same goes for the State football finals. Not many coaches are going to these events like they used too.

Likely out of the KHSAA's control, but playing high school games during a UK game seems to always draw smaller crowds.

He's incorrect in his suggestion a Taylor Co.-South Oldham SF would've boosted numbers. The South Laurel people were far better represented than South Oldham, and the Taylor people would have definitely been there. Taylor making a deep run was the KHSAA's best hope.

I still think it depends on what teams are there that determines attendance.

Yes even reason they moved the 5th - 10th first round game to night time in first round from the traditional 1:30 start.

KHSAA got lucky the first year they did the Sunday final cause Madison Central was in the final and had a huge crowd there.

Bring back the Final 4 and Championship on Saturday!!!!

The Mercer-Dunbar game had a nice crowd on wednesday night. Doss making it to the finals didnt do the attendance any favors. I would also like to see a saturday morning session and saturday night champ game. Maybe attendance is down but revenue for the Lex area and hotels are still up bcos some stayed for Sunday.

It is definitely a big determining factor, abso-freaking-lutely. Why some can't see that or dismiss it I can't understand.

With the YUM Center being so much nicer, has there been any talk of trying in Louisville again?

Cant afford the rent.

I think you are absolutely correct. I know alot of coaches who used to go that don't attend anymore.
