KHSAA Board of Control approves Football Playoff Structure in 5A, 6A & RFP Ball

Featured Replies

While I am admittingly new to 6A football, I must be missing something. Dont all other sports and all othere divisions of football have set regions you must win every year to advance? How are the rest of 6A football avoiding them if they win the region? To me and my knowledge is only from being on here it seems the main argument is from the city of Louisville wanting two teams in the state finals. For some reason a lot of people on here feel 6A football should be treated differently from every other division and sport in the state.

6A football IS treated differently than every other division and every other sport. When you disregard geography to put 3 of the top teams in the state in the same district and then flip that district from one side of the bracket to the other annually, there is little argument that 6A is being treated differently than every other class of football and every other sport.

The division of 6A regions should have been extremely simple geographically for the KHSAA for this alignment. There are 2 districts in each area of Louisville, Western Kentucky, Lexington and Northern Kentucky. Those 2 area districts should have been paired as the regions. The semifinal pairings could have been rotated, but the regions were very simple geographically. The cross-districting was done to get an All Louisville final in some years. The rest of the state gets a lot of criticism about not wanting to be paired with the big 3, but the fact is the current 6A playoff structure is designed because the 2 Louisville districts did not want to be paired as a region.

I agree with all of this. They have fixed the super district issue now they need to define geographical regions and stick to them.

If you ask me it is because of a handful of schools/coaches that continually complain about the Big 3. Everyone wants to avoid Male, T, and X until they get to the finals and then hope by some Miracle they don't face any of those teams in the finals. I think 5A getting sucked in is collateral damage in an attempt to create a cover story for 6A. This is just my opinion, I would love to hear what some coaches have to say about it.

Sounds spot on.

At some point some lawyer parents may take KHSAA to task on being arbitrary and capricious. If there is one thing that government function who is constitutionally bound should never be its arbitrary and capricious in treating students in similar situated circumstances differently. But they do with things like the super-district (since corrected); the limiting of some classes to only 32 teams (1A and 6A); districts that have 6 teams while some have only 4;and rotational cross-districting playoffs (for only 1, and now 2 classes).

So the 6A NKY schools can be huddled in their little pool of mediocrity and play for 2nd every year?

I had to laugh when I read a thread in the basketball thread about seeding the Sweet 16 so that the best teams wouldn't play each other in the early rounds. I wonder how many of the people that support that also support a strict geographical alignment for football?

That is a good point. How can people be for seeding the Sweet 16 and not football?

That is entirely incorrect. Until 2015 there were always 3 Louisville district (because they had 12 6A schools). NKY had only 5 6A schools and thus 1 district. From 11-14 the super district prevented an all-Louisville final, but before then the 2 Western KY Brackets and the Western-most Louisville brackets were regions 1 and 2, with the third Louisville district sharing a region with NKY.

In 2015 Ohio County (WKY), Cooper and Conner (NKY) volunteered to move up a class into 6A. This allowed Fern Creek, Oldham County (Lou.) and Dixie Heights (NKY) to move down. This gave Louisville 10 schools and NKY 6, allowing the KHSAA to create 2 3-school NKY districts and shrink Louisville to 2 5-school districts.

Assuming that the system is not manipulated (ie everyone plays where their enrollment would naturally put them) a geographical distribution would result in an All-Louisville final most years, which is why the KHSAA first created the super-district, then allowed schools to move around so they could restrict Louisville to two districts.

That is why fans of the Big Three are annoyed.

EDIT: And even with the cross-districting the change would only allow an All-Louisville in 2017. If this was intended to placate the grievances of the Big Three then they are only being thrown a bone.

Sweet 16 plays all their games in the same place, football does not.

The history lesson is appreciated, but the fact of the current alignment is there are 2 Louisville, 2 WKY, 2 Lexington and 2 NKY districts. Those should be the regions. How it happened is irrelavent to that fact.

No teams should be allowed to play up or down in class and regions should be decided geographically. In your history example, cross-districting made sense. In the current alignment, it does not.

The bolded sections are incompatible. You cannot have 2 NKY districts without teams playing up. You would not have enough NKY teams.

There was no cross-districting in the past. The eastern-most Louisville district was always in the same Region as the NKY district.

They are compatible. The KHSAA let teams play up. It is my opinion that they should not have let them. Since the KHSAA let teams play up, it created 4 easily defineable geographic regions by simply looking at a map and drawing a circle.

There has been cross districting for years. Below is from 2011 - 2014.

6A-R1: D1 vs. D4, D1 vs. D3, D1 vs. D5, D1 vs. D2, D1 vs. D4

6A-R2: D2 vs. D7, D2 vs. D4, D2 vs. D3, D3 vs. D6, D2 vs. D7

6A-R3: D3 vs. D5, D5 vs. D7, D6 vs. D7, D4 vs. D5, D3 vs. D5

6A-R4: D6 vs. D8, D6 vs. D8, D4 vs. D8, D7 vs. D8, D6 vs. D8

I do understand your point, but that doesn't change the fact that the KHSAA did allow teams to play up, there are 2 NKY districts, and a 5 year old with a pencil could draw a circle around the districts that are closest to each on a map to decide the regions.

You are correct about the cross-districting in past years. I edited my post after realizing my mistake before you replied.

However, given that they have done cross-districting for years it does seem to undermine your original point that this is being done for the benefit of the Big Three. And if somehow they were responsible for this round of cross-districting why is an All-Louisville Final only possible one year out of three?

Also, to understand your position about creating regions, when realigning for 2019-2022 the KHSAA should not allow teams to petition to move up or down, even if that means Louisville has three districts and shares a region with a single NKY district?

First question: The KHSAA decided to cross district and decided the pairings. WKY, Lexington and NKY wanted geographic regions. In a system of geographic regions, Louisville would never play each other in the finals. Cross districting allowed for them to play each other the one time you mentioned.

Second question: Yes. If that is what makes the most sense geographically.

In addition, if the state decided to use some type of ranking system to seed teams for the playoffs, I would be all for that. The issue is our state is too spread out in distance as a result of the 6 class system. But that is for a different thread.
