Landlord refuse to rent to anyone who supports Trump

Featured Replies

As mentioned several times, the protected class caveat rules. I believe there are 10-12 federal protected class definitions and then individual states have expanded the list.

Where it does get sticky legally is if it's a black person/gay person who the landlord somehow garners who they support politically. It would seem at that point the landlord has a way to get around discrimination laws.

Good point.

I see your point. But what if the cake, instead of a lynching, depicted a white robed clansman and a cross?

Now it gets interesting. Is the KKK recognized as a religion?

In this instance, I do not believe the cross is a religious symbol.

Very interesting responses. Right down party lines.

What's your take, Jess? Yes or no?

I don't think it's really down party lines is it ? Feels like a majority agree that is legal. I have no problem with it.

But how would the landlord know. I personally don't walk around with my political beliefs publicly displayed.

I dont know. I have not decided where I stand on this. Its a slippery slope to quote theguru. I agree its probably legal but its also hypocritical. Im going to have to stew on it.

More stirring of the pot by the supremely tolerant left. Odd , very strange , they tend to be very tolerant on items that fit the liberal agenda but nutty than squirrel turds when it doesn't .

Kinda like blaming Trump for violence as they block streets and cause accidents and threaten his family and rant like lunatics . And no I dont even like Trump.

I think this is a fair take.

I own some rental property myself and just my own way, but I would never rent with restrictions like this. But if he feels this strongly about it and he owns it, its his property, then he has that right. Of course I feel that way about other things, but as I have been told, I cannot discriminate against a "protected class" even though it goes against everything I believe. Thats why I think its hypocritical.

Maybe political party should be a protected class. As things are now it seems that Dems and Reps are pretty well split down the middle in the country, but say it would go 74 / 25 towards either party, could we potentially see a situation where the minority is discriminated against in an effort to keep the other side from every coming into power.

What if you had to vote a certain way in order to keep a job, etc. It may never get that far in either direction but I would hate to see the country ever get into a situation where one had to forfeit their political beliefs in order to get by.

Or to even get interviewed for one?
