I finally got tired of paying the $8 a month lease fee for time warner internet modem. I bought my own modem at walmart. So far I'm happy it seems to be faster than the one I leased from time warner.

I finally got tired of paying the $8 a month lease fee for time warner internet modem. I bought my own modem at walmart. So far I'm happy it seems to be faster than the one I leased from time warner.

 

I need to do that too.

 

Over the last couple of years Cincinnati Bell Zoomtown has gone from charging $1.99 to increasing it last year to $4.99, to now all of the sudden upping it to $7.99.

 

That's just ridiculous, and especially for the same unit I've been using for about 7 years.

 

What brand did you buy, and how much did it run you?

 

I'm now up to paying $95.88 a year, so no doubt buying one is the way to go.

I bought an Arris/Motorola SB6141. It is on the compatible modem list for Time Warner. It costs me around $70.

The screwy part is that on the various blogs I've read regarding the crazy modem fee, Zoomtown customers had purchased their own modem, returned Cincinnati's Bell's to them, and still CB won't take the fee off of their bill saying that the fee is not for the equipment, but for the "option" of using the equipment.

 

Aside from the fee increase, that is also nuts.

 

I guess that I should first phone CB to hear the garbage first hand before deciding what to do.

Look on their website and see if they have a list of compatible modems. Then I'd call them before you bought your own. I know as soon as I called time warner to get my new modem authorized they took off the lease fee for the modem I had through them. I'm taking theirs back tomorrow.

FYI I just called CB to switch from TW because fioptics internet is available in my area now. They said you can't use another router and the $7.99 is not optional. :irked:

I did it and it was easy. I had to factory reset my wireless router to get it to work though. After that no problems.

I'm very happy with mine so far. My internet seems to be faster with the modem I bought than the leased time warner one.

I have had my own for a while and TW internet has been perfectly fine for me.

 

I think a lot of people who complain about their internet don't really understand when it's an ISP issue as opposed to a computing/user issue.

 

I have had Fioptics and Time Warner and have never really had any issues. Occasional reboot of the router/modem, but that's it.
