The O-line Ashland used last night did not have a player who started there last year.

In addition to Snodgrass & Walters, Brian Salyers a projected starter at guard is also out with an injury.

If Ashland's lines were hurting on both sides of the ball , I am encouraged by the scrimmage last night ... Ashland had equal or better skilled kids other than the tight end. Ashland's recievers were open all night , the qb could really sling the ball , he threw darts , likely hard to catch.

Ashland can have a running game .. it was #40 ... Put him at tailback ... he had pop and didn't care to get hit. Others for Ashland slowed down before contact and didn't use there size to deliver a blow...

Again , Ashland can go along way if line play improves ...

Against the Devils, line #40 up at tailback , Fields at fullback and bring it between the tackles , Like in 2003 you folks might really like the outcome ... 2003 was a long night of getting pounded by your fullback/tailback.

But you seriously do make some good points. Darrell has an incredible arm and can make some great throws, maybe even a better arm than Holbrook. Once his consistency improves he can be a great one. Josh Cordle (#40) and Fields should be in the backfield and Thomas could be more productive at receiver. The line just cant open any holes for him and there is no sense wasting his speed if he has to run into a brickwall all night. Let him catch the ball in space where he has a chance to turn on the jets. I cant believe we are only 5 days away!

Ashland looked like a different team from the last scrimmage. They showed signs of being a very good football team. The QB did a nice job and I thought the o-line was much better. Their center and left Guard opened some nice holes. I don't know the players or their numbers but they did a nice job. Ironton was a little flat at times but got better as the game progressed. Their tight end was a beast. Ashland's kicker also looked like the real deal.Good luck to the Tomcats, except for the opener.

I thought Mahan played like he wanted to be the QB.He had pinpoint passing sometimes between two and three defenders ,plus he ran the ball with heart and hit it up in there at the goal line. The advantages showed with McDAVID at wide out blocking on the outside plays, the one play with Thomas and him blocking on a quick pitch worked well for big yardage to the goal line and then taking forever to punch it in up the middle. That close we should be able to get off the ball and move people and score in a power set.

The timing on getting a crisp(quick) snap could use some improvement, the centers and QBs should get as many snaps as they can at least 100-200 or more a day ,even if they have to do it in gym class or lunch. The center for Herb Conleys team spent more time with the backs on offensive days then the lineman getting the timing down, which would help tremendously on running or passing the football.

Ironton looked good as usually, the line padded up on their arms and getting after it and backs running hard with disire.Ironton will do fine.:thumb:

The Tomcats looked better last night. I’m glad that we scheduled scrimmages with tough opponents because I think that will make us better sooner. This game provided great experience for the O-line while Walters, Snodgrass and Salyer are sitting out.

The QB question seems to have been answered last night. Now they can polish their timing, focusing on one QB.

Look for these cats to continue to improve as the season unfolds.

Ashland Football,

After watching both scrimmages it is painfully clear that the Tomcats have some work to do.. The scrimmage against Ironton was a vast improvement over the first one, although these two teams were a stark contrast to each other. One being a fast and ultra quick team, and the other being a strong big team.. At this point Ashland is much better equip to handle big teams than it is to handle really quick teams. I’m sure as timing and an OL line gets to work together this will change...

Ashland Vs. Ironton... started with an OL that didn’t last the first set of downs, removing the center shifting Jesse Parsley (55) to center, moving Andrew Dillon (53)to guard , Aaron Erwin(77 Tackle) and Robby Renfroe (72 Tackle) the only lineman not moved was Travis Gallaher (58 Guard) This line seem to do a lot better showing they could pass block and giving Darrell Mahan time to show the fans that he could pass the football, the backfield also showed some improvement, if they settle in using Mahan as QB I think the timing will just get better.

The DL line looked solid and Ironton had their problems running the football against the DL line(1st team), I’m sure it is still a work in progress but, the Raceland game will give us more answers. When the second team came in the game, Ironton seem to run over them.

I know that a lot of people wonder about the two lineman that are injured. We all hope that both can recover and get back in the game... Ashland is not lacking in lineman but it takes` a little time to adjust when you have to change personal, with or without them Ashland will have a good line.

I understand that Walters may be able to play by the Portsmouth West game, but I’m sure that will depend on his ability to recover from the protruding disk injury and Lacy Snodgrass may get to dress before long, although he didn’t dress today in practice

I’m excited to see the football season start. It should be a ton of fun to watch

Go Tomcats!

Welcome Trimmer308,

I Hope that the injured will be able to start playing before then but if not the Cats do have people that will step in and give a good effort. It is hard to work on cohesiveness with people out but they will be OK. It is looking to be an exciting game come Friday night and I'm sure a good Raceland team will come to play.

.

Good luck to both teams and let's get the football season started!!

Ashland was not physical enough to play with Ironton on the ground. Ashland has big play again this year. Ashland has the kids , lot's of coaches and many skilled players. If Ashland can get better on the ground on both sides of the ball they can develope into a good team. #40 for Ashland stood toe to toe with the Tigers but he was about it, that surprised me ... Ironton only had around 34 kids dressed. Their lines were quick , strong and would hit you. I was impressed by Ironton lines and tight end. I truly believe Ashland had equal or better skill players ... Just not as hardnosed as Ironton ... But who is , to be the man you have to beat the man and the Tigers live and die with this ... Good Luck to both Teams

Ashlands number 40 is Josh Cordle. I agree that he is one of the most physical players at Ashland as well as being quite agile for his size, as the Ironton game displayed.

Was there really a 3.00 charge to get into a scrimmage game.

I was reading on a small but really good site site that most of the Tiger fans post on these days and this stuck out in one of the post,

The pikeville scrimmage that had four teams there charged $5.00 to get in.

First off Id like to say its great to finally be on here. Ive read for a while now and decided it was time to join the elite! Hopefully my input will be respectfully taken. Obviously from the thread Ill make my famous first post from Im and Ashland fan, lived here all my life and love Football, no matter what level. As for my Cats... I attended both scrimmages and saw a lot of similarities to last years squad. Slow to develop an offensive line and having to rely on the Defense and the pass to stay in Football games. But I believe full heartedly that with time an aggresive, smart and tough offensive line will develop. The passing game looked good, I like Mahan under center better than Drew, but thought Drew played very well too. I would imagine that Drew wants to catch the ball instead of throw it, but Ive been wrong before. These group of Kids will come together, and hopefully sooner than expected.

Ive also heard some rumors that Brian Salyers will be back in pads today, and Walters could play some Friday Night. Im not sure how Fields Davis is doing, we need him 100% healthy, but I tell you, Josh Cordle played a heck of a game Saturday. But thats just my humble opinion, Good luck to the Cats and all other area teams this week.

The new kid on the block,

Yoter

Thanks alot MS. I think Im in store for a lot of fun.

Anticipating Good times,

Yoter
