Huge loss for GC. A program on the brink of returning back to relevance. Going to be hard going foward, especially this late in the hiring season. Tough blow for the program. Happy for Chris though. Good dude, good coach.

The senior class will have to pick this team up, pack it on their shoulders and carry it through the season no matter who the coach is. These kids have been together, some since the third grade and all of them since the sixth grade. If it can be done, I have faith that this group of hard working young men can do it.

Any talk of who may take over? Armstrong? What about surrounding school assistants, Dowdy, Francis, Grizzle, or Evans? Will the McPeek name make an apperance? Imo, they need to take care of it quick.

If they were smart which many schools aren't I would at least reach out to coach Nathan McPeek to see if he's interested. If he's not then maybe randy vanderhoof

Whether it is right or wrong, I don't think Coach McPeek is going to get a job in Ky this year. His name has been mentioned for every open job so far and they haven't panned out. I guess things are still too fresh in people's minds.

You might be right but it's been 2 plus years time for people to move on. Bobby Petrino just got contract extension lol. Pretty sure bell offered and he declined.

Coach McPeek would be a nice hire in my opinion.

With the Sr class they have possibly heading the best class and most tallent they have had in almost 20 years, imo, they should interim a OC or DC and keep things as close to what they would have been as possible. 2017 was set to be another rebuilding year. I say keep that path.

I imagine it does pay better. I doubt the GC school system pays well at all, they have had some financial issues in years past so I doubt it's one of the higher paying school systems in the state.

 

As well as that, there hasn't been a high amount of talent to work with at GC recently. Yet Mullins has done well with what he has had to work with and was able to get the kids to buy into his defensive philosophy. With the athletes available at Dunbar he could really let his coaching abilities shine if he can get everyone to buy in and do things his way. IMO, there is a lot of talent available at all of the Lex schools, so a good coach can turn a bad team into a good one really quick. I'm not saying Dunbar is a bad team, I don't know much about them, but Mullins has already shown that he can turn a bad team around.

 

Long story short, it's a great hire for Dunbar in my opinion. It's also a good opportunity for Mullins, as a coach and financially. I do feel bad for GC though because they were just starting to get things going and the kids seemed to really love coach Mullins. Hopefully they can make a good hire and keep the momentum going, if not I imagine those kids will lose interest quick and GC will be fighting to get a win or two every season.

Dunbar hasn't had a winning season since 2005. Over the past decade, they've been the worst of the Lexington public schools. @JDEaston is right about the talent and athleticism that Mullins will be working with at Dunbar. The talent in Lexington is far beyond anything you'll find in Greenup Co.

 

Coach Mullins is moving from the small pond of Greenup Co. into the deep blue sea of big school 6A football where the Louisville schools have run a monopoly on state titles. To be honest, I'm not sure which program has a higher ceiling at the moment. The big Lexington schools have been massive underacheivers for a long time now. Greenup Co. certainly has some high hurdles to clear to achieve postseason success, but Dunbar's hurdles might be higher.

I believe Greenup had a pretty good freshman team last season. I could be wrong, but I think they beat Ashland, Raceland, and Russell. In 2017, those kids will be juniors. If they continue to progress, that season might not be a rebuilding year.

College and High School not comparable in this way. Let's face it as a high school in Kentucky you are taking a huge risk hiring McPeek just because of past offenses. May not be right or fair but it's the truth.

What risks? The one offense was an ineligible player same thing happened to Dale mueller at Fort Thomas Highlands. Simply saying yes bad thing happened but don't see the risk like your saying because like all human beings people learn from mistakes. He's to good of a coach for Greenup county in my opinion but figured given the circumstances they may contact him. Good luck to Greenup in the search.
