I was talking with a parent from Lafayette last night before the Lafayette/Boyle County game and he told me they don't have buses for away games. I am assuming this goes for all Lexington schools? Why is that? Is it a money issue and does that go for all sports? Don't the football teams take school buses to away games?

 

Can anyone shed some light on that for me?

It's the dumbest situation I've ever heard of. Fayette County doesn't provide free transportation for athletics. If teams want to take a bus they have to pay for it. Fayette County feels it spends to much money on normal school transportation daily between all the elementary, middle, and high schools that they don't want to spend more on athletic trips. The kicker though is if a public school team travels further then 60 miles from their school they are REQUIRED to take a bus. So it's either pay for a Fayette County school bus or rent a charter. You see more charters used then anything. I know Henry Clay uses a charter bus every time they travel but that's an expense they have to pay themselves. It's a joke.

I wouldn't be surprised if more started this practice, or banning them from going on long distance trips.

A little off topic, but pretty sure Boone County's baseball team doesn't use school buses for transportation to any games.

It seems as if when my son played the boosters paid for the driver and buses for football and I know a parent or grandparent paid for a charter bus out of their own pocket on one occasion.

That's what your booster organization is for!

Riding with own parents it would not be. Also, waivers could be signed.

With basketball and other sports like baseball/softball when you are playing 30-40 games that bus millage and driver salary can up to being alot.Usually about half those total games are on the road.

Wonder if Fayette Co. pays their coaches millage to drive them selves to away games?

I think that Fayette County schools actually have an athletic budget for their high school programs. Several school districts do not fund anything for athletics outside of coaching salaries. Football and boys basketball pay the bills for those schools coupled with fundraising.

If you want to take a bus to a game...raise the money.

If you want new helmets....raise the money.

If you want new weights...raise the money.

If you want to buy baseballs....raise the money.

If you want to have painted lines on the field...raise the money.
