Mayfield 28 Milan, TN 14 Scrimmage

Featured Replies

Mayfield's varsity looked real good against a very big and experienced Milan team. The running game was a pleasant surprise. Mayfield scored 4 times hitting all four extra points. Milan scored twice hitting both extra points also.

Milan's JV beat Mayfield's JV 28-0.

Mayfield look better than I expected considering the grad losses and Milan being a TN. prenial power. The Cards have a freshman RB that was a real difference maker, I think he also picked off a pass on defense but with no numbers on the jersey it was hard to be sure. The scrimmage also pointed out some concerns. After Mayfield got out of the gate with a fast start Milan took control until what I assume was the equal to a half time break and when Mayfield came back out they were much more determined and it showed. Concerns were a few long pass completions and at times they ran the ball very well against us but in defense of Mayfield Milans line looked like they out weighed Mayfield a 100 pounds a man and they were deeper which is no suprise considering they are a bigger school. The lack of line depth will clearly be a problem for Mayfield early in the season when it is hot like today. We just dont have the numbers to offset this.

Dont worry about the JV not showing up at all, they will be fine with more work

Does anyone know where Milan is in the preseason polls in TN?

Milan was 9-3 last year. Haven't seen any TN preseason rankings yet.

I don't but I am gonna guess that it is not to lofty based on today which we all know means absolutely nothing

TP,

We disagree there. Scrimmages mean something but it is hard to nail down just what each one of them means.

Milan was supposed to have handed it to Mayfield today. Milan had alot of returning players especially in the line. I am surprised at this outcome. Mayfield should hold its own against most class 1A schools this year.

Milan was picked second in Region 7-2A by the coaches and fourth overall in Tennessee's Division I-2A. Milan is returning 5 defensive starters and four offensive starters from 2005.

Thanks Red, I think that makes this a big "win" for Mayfield.

While we are at it where is MBA ranked?

I'll answer through this link as it also addresses where Manual's first opponent is ranked (in a nutshell, MBA is 5th, Brentwood Academy is 1st).

Let me know if you need any more preseason Tennessee rankings.

Now you know how Bardstown's DL felt against you guys last year, 'Pick!

I was at the scrimmage, but I thought the score was tied myself, but it was hard to tell at times cause I was sitting on the sidelines. I was a little concerned when Landon Heath came out but I was told that he was having some back problems. Towards the end of the scrimmage it looked like Andy Trevarthen came out with what looked like a broken arm but I thought I heard one of the coaches say that it was only dislocated, which could still cause him some problems during the season I would think. Adam Shelton looked great when the coach just wanted to run some passing plays but I don't look for that during the season as our running game looked great as usual, does anybody know the freshman's name that was running so well, he was lighting fast. I agree with the line, I was totally amazed at the size of Milans offensive line, I don't know if Mayfield will face a line like that this year but I felt we were effective against it. I am constantly impressed with Aaron Williams, he is an excellent kicker and what I have been starting to notice an excellent defensive player, I think he is playing saftey, not sure again because of no numbers on the jerseys. He had at least 1 interception, maybe two. All in all I was very pleased with the outcome of the scrimmage.

Milan's varsity only scored twice. It was Milan’s JV that scored the rest of the times against Mayfield's JV.

Brent Simpkins looked real good on defense at the linebacker spot. Tyrese Murrell (don't know if that is how you spell his name) was the freshman running back. He did real well. Both receivers did well also. Chad Saxton at fullback did a fantastic job.

I saw you and your father-in-law at the scrimmage.

I was pleasantly surprised at the way that Mayfield came out against Milan Friday afternoon as I was not sure what we would see with all the new faces. Murrell really stepped up in his first outing for Mayfield...and he looks like he could be a real surprise for the Cards this year. Trevarthan ran extremely hard as always and Shelton looked good throwing the ball and his decision making has taken another step forward this year. My only concern as well is the depth of this years team as injuries could determine just how well this team goes this year. But all in all...a very good first outing for a young Cardinals team against a much bigger and more experienced Milan team.

Go Cards!!!
