My question is why is Weyer at NewCath?

 

I will try and answer this for you as best I can. Ben grew up playing basketball with several of the kids that currently play with Highlands either on the Moyer school team or an AAU team coached by myself. As Ben got exposure playing in the AAU league, other teams swooped in and asked him to play with them in tourney's and other leagues. Through all of that, Ben still liked to play basketball with all of the kids that he went to school with at Highlands Middle School. The kid worked hard at his game and became not only an inside presence, but an outside presence as well.

 

During the 8th grade middle school season, 3 kids were asked to move up and play some frosh games due to a lack of players caused by defections for various reasons. Ben was one of the 3 moved up and to be honest he was probably shorted a little on his time. He then made the decision that he no longer wanted to play frosh, but strictly with the 8th grade team.

 

That is when coaches saw the opportunity to be in his ear as well as being visible. I will not go any further with that part of it. Another factor contributing to the decision was that virtually all of the kids that he played with in middle school were football players. Take all of this into consideration and Ben made the choice along with his parents to attend NCC and to be very very honest, it was certainly the right decision for him to make and it has worked out well for him.

 

His leaving the Highlands program was a major setback because he was "that" kid who concentrated solely on basketball and was someone that you could build your team around.

Past 4 years they have.

 

They've certainly been a strong team. Not sure if I'd say "powerhouse" simply due to their inability to win with great talent.

If Kentucky was like all the other states and had classes for state titles they would be considered a powerhouse. Now against Highlands the past 4 years they have been the most dominant with a winning margin of about 40. Not bad for a school that has about 160 boys in it.

The number of boys in a school does not mean much in high school basketball where only 5 can play at a time. The right 5 or 6 can take you a long way no matter who the opponent is.

I see. Well with the success that the JV and younger teams are having sounds like the program is on solid ground for a really nice run.

Newcath dominated the game from start to finish. Not saying NCC is a powerhouse but compared to HHS they certainly are. A foul call did not turn any tide because NCC was riding the wave from the opening tip. Even a Technical could not have changed the outcome of this game. HHS had 7 straight turnovers early in the 2nd half. Bluebird Basketball Fans full of dreams and wishes and memories of Draud, Smith, Fischer, etc. Those guys are all grandpas now.

You sound like someone who has no clue but who your rooting for! You know nothing about basketball then.

Don't hang your hat on wins over a football school these past 4 yrs, hang it on Regional games that matter.

You do know last time Highlands beat Newcath was in 2008. I don't care if your a football school or not there is no reason why Highlands can't be good in basketball. There are way to many athletes in those years that could of help the basketball program out. It use to be the best rivalry in the 9th now it's pretty much laughable. And for your comment on winning regions. People don't understand with CovCath and Holmes being in the same district and being in the top 10 in the state the past 2 or 3 years. Newcath had to beat both of them to get out of the region. The draw just didn't favor Newcath and everyone knows anybody can beat anybody on any given night especially if you are top teams in state. I will leave it at that. I hope Highlands can start getting the kids to play basketball it makes the Newcath games way more exciting. The Mic is drop.

Didn't mean to cause any trouble with my post just stating in my opinion that NCC has a lack of post season success in the regional. They have very good team this year and could very well end up in Rupp Arena in March.

At least know the facts before you go talking about something. There are no kids walking the halls at Highlands High School not playing basketball that should be. Most of the seniors played AAU basketball up through and including their frosh year. The difference is that football became their number sport and apparently they must have been good enough at it to compete at the next level.

 

Big difference comparing a team of basketball only kids with a team that is comprised mostly of multiple sport athletes.

 

The argument about beating Holmes and CovCath is a weak one IMO. They were more than good enough these last few years to not only win the region, but make a nice advancement in the Sweet 16. And as the old saying goes, you got to beat the best at some point in time in order to achieve your goals.
