January 25, 201610 yr No, this is not the same story as we had last week. This time, the boy carried the girl to the nurse's office. Texas eighth-grader suspended for rescuing classmate during asthma attack
January 25, 201610 yr Wasn't the other one in Texas as well? Not sure what these families can do, but there are enough lawyers out there willing to get some exposure.
January 25, 201610 yr Email the nurse? Hell, what happened to the intercom system? Certainly that would have been quicker. And honestly, to ask the kids, whether alternative or not, to sit there and listen to the girl until the teacher got a response from the school nurse via EMAIL is beyond stupid. While we'd like the young man to not use the "F" word, at least at school, he showed some mature concern for a fellow student that needed help. As an alternative student he should get some praise for his help of that student. ONCE AGAIN COMMON SENSE HAS LEFT THE BUILDING.

And in response to the bolded, in my opinion, that there may be one of the reasons why some schools just don't even want to use common sense.
January 25, 201610 yr And in response to the bolded, in my opinion, that there may be one of the reasons why some schools just don't even want to use common sense. But in this case, what if the student died because of the way that the teacher handled it? Didn't Icky Woods son who went to Princeton HS die of an asthma attack?
January 25, 201610 yr But in this case, what if the student died because of the way that the teacher handled it? Didn't Icky Woods son who went to Princeton HS die of an asthma attack? I'd rather deal with the consequences when I tried to get help as opposed to sitting there and doing nothing. I think the Icky's son had an attack at his home.
January 26, 201610 yr Seriously....email...and wait for a response? Really? Seems the reponse was appropriate ".... that".
January 26, 201610 yr I think the Icky's son had an attack at his home. You are correct. I don't know if there are organizations that deal with more bureaucratic crap, more than school districts.
January 26, 201610 yr Not sure FERPA was designed to be used in that manner, but the Superintendent was smart to hide behind it.
January 26, 201610 yr Where is our resident pharmacist? If I were school personnel I would error on the side of getting the kid to the nurse. Who in their right mind would email the nurse in a possible life or death situation? Good thing that this week and last week we will never know what would had happened if these two kids didn't act as they did.
January 26, 201610 yr The fact that it was an alternative school has to play a role in the behavior of kids. I'm thankful he did the right thing, but there has to be some parameters in alternative school that aren't the same for the students in a regular classroom.
January 26, 201610 yr If you're having a true asthma attack and don't have your rescue inhaler, Albuterol, you could die within a few minutes. When I was in the 8th grade we lost a kid to this but he was at home playing outside.
January 27, 201610 yr A tip of the hat to the kid. And a second tip of the hat for good and proper use of the "f" bomb, perfectly appropriate.

Brother, you don't drop the F bomb in school in front of the teacher. Shows a lack of respect although I can sympathize with the kid and the frustration of the situation.

Well, she was just letting a child sit there and die in her classroom, if not for his heroism. Not sure how much respect she deserved. Agree to disagree.
