I don't know. I didn't catch the whole explanation, but the vibe I got was it was not something that they could have done under the old Commish, but with the change in the guard, they got it approved. They didn't say it in those words, but that was the impression I got.

The Reds HOF is affiliated with MLB so Pete's ban filtered there too.

 

Joe Morgan had to personally call Selig to get him to sign off on Pete being able to walk onto the field for Joe's ceremony in 2013.

This must be the consolation prize from MLB.

I am happy for him , though. His life seems to be so unfulfilling that this will be great for him personally. It will allow us to forget the clown show that's been going on since 1987.

I'm 32 and I'll be coming in town for this event. Wouldn't of caught me at a Reds game all year except for this.

...and a statue is planned sometime. Pete says he would prefer to remembered with a head first slide and not him "standing at the two dollar window at Turfway Park!"

 

Believe me.....you would never see Pete at a two dollar window. (And that was back 40 years ago when there was a two dollar window).

Good for Pete and his fans. I could care less about him. Said it before on here. HOFer as a ball player without debate, the rest of his life is pathetic and really sad. IMO should never be in the Baseball HOF.

I believe the explanation on Pete's eligibility for the Reds HOF is this. Technically, MLB's ban only pertains to MLB controlled activities. That means the Hall of Fame's can set their own rules on who is or isn't eligible. If you recall, the Baseball HOF changed their rules two years after Pete was banned by MLB. If the HOF had not changed their rules, the writers would have been able to vote on Pete later that year when he became eligible even though he was still banned by MLB. Bottom line is the MLB ban is separate from the HOF ban.

 

The Reds HOF put in the banishment rule in the early 2000's. With Manfred's decision and statements, it became clear that he was speaking only to Pete's banishment from MLB and the HOF's could do what they wanted to do since they are governed separately. The Reds HOF board got clarification that this was true and changed their rule so they could vote Pete in.
