January 12, 201610 yr OK...we'd all do some good, maybe mostly good with our new found windfall...but what is the biggie, the one thing you never dreamed was possible that you do or buy if you hit the Powerball? Maybe one of those $15,000,000 Log Houses on Epic Log Homes A $30,000,000 estate in Hawaii (I'd be leaning towards this) Maybe some sort of car collection A Private Island My own Private Lake Your favorite band or performer to play your birthday or New Years Eve Party Minority share of your favorite team The row of seats behind the Kentucky bench (20 or 30 seats should be enough) The practical side of me set aside, what would I splurge on? I would likely buy some kind of plane. I've always wanted to be a pilot, might as well do it in my own plane. I have no desire to have an estate in Hawaii or on the coast. I would be much happier on a ranch or a mountain retreat somewhere out west. I would love to spend my days hunting or fishing in the wide open spaces. Montana or Wyoming would be ideal. I think I would like to build an outdoor fun park adjacent to a lake. Zip lines, trail riding, ropes courses, water slides, jet skis, etc. I'd open it up on the weekends and have big parties for family and friends.

January 12, 201610 yr FWIW in post #1, almost NOBODY pays $50,000 a year for college. That's the cost of many small private colleges, which the majority of students around the nation do not attend and the majority of students at private schools (the minimum was 95% in the 10 or so schools I looked at) do not pay $50,000. But you are right, it is a lot of money that could pay for a lot of people's loans and student loans. Also, anyone know how much of this the winner will see after taxes? I'm guessing it varies in each state/city/county, but I know local most local governments would gladly tax the winner in addition to the federal government.
January 12, 201610 yr I love the Facebook meme going around about the jackpot that ignores proper math. Yeah, I want that $4.33 to put in my bank account. Reminds me of the three checks I cashed at the bank today from my side job that netted me a grand total of $18.42.

January 12, 201610 yr What would I buy? The Molly Malone's bartender's phone number... But in all seriousness, I'd pay off my house, my car, my student loans, my parents house, brother's college tuition, and all those things first. I'd donate to the high school. Donate to various organizations (cancer research foundations and SAAP among others). Some sort of scholarship fund. And then who knows. A few nice vacations for friends and family. Not sure if I'd buy a bigger house or not seeing as the one I have is enough for me (who really needs 15 bedrooms when they only use one?). Rest would be invested for future generations.

I pointed out the faulty math and the dude argued with me...said he didn't need all $4.33 million he'd just take a million of it then we could help other countries too. You just wonder how some people remember to breathe sometimes.
