No support for 6 classes in Ashland area?

Featured Replies

"Sparks said the proposal has not been particularly well received in the area. “I didn’t hear a major outcry for change. I haven’t heard a lot of support for it, but out there somewhere (in the state) there obviously is,” he said. “I don’t know where that pocket of administrators or pocket of coaches is, but it’s here whether we like it or not.”

KHSAA releases football districts

I'm wondering if the coaches in NEKY were against this and the coaches in NKY were against it, what part of the state were big supporters for 6 classes?

Didn't it seem that they were against and for it in the same breath? I read negatives and positive all in the same article? Maybe I nned to read it again.;)

6 Classes does ZERO for some schools here in NEKY, but make the District travel time alot more than it was before. As I understand the realignment Ashland's nearest District game would be with Johnson Central an hour and a half down US 23. The rest of the District games would be up Interstate 64 to Lexington and beyond which would make travel time at 2+ hours....

I'm not sure where Russell fits in the picture but its not pretty for Ashland to travel 2+ hours to play a District game and I'm sure its like wise with the other teams in the "new" District.

6A is for the birds and its just a way to keep the publics quite...... We should get on KDE butts now....JMO

You do realize that with only three or four district games, you would only have to travel one or two times a year during the regular season. If you win your district, thats it untill the regional. Two times Max. It's hard for me to cry a river over two games a year.:D

A lot of displeasure concerning the 6 class system seems to be the amount of travel involved with the new districts. One aspect of this that I have not seen is the fact that JV games will be adversly affected also. Usually the visiting varsity team hosts the JV game the next morning. So 32's cry of only 2 trips a year is incorrect. One way or another teams will have to make the trip to every district school every year. Unless the JV policy is changed. Another consideriation with JV games will concern changing the start times of the games where extensive travel is involved. I cant see a team playing a home game fri nite, and getting their JV team to location that is 2 hours away by 10:00AM. I'd like to see JV play more of a local schedule to solve these issues.

What's the big problem getting the kids up there by 7 to leave at 7:30 and play a game at 10? I don't see the time problem that you do personally. As for the cost aspect of it, if its a problem, do as you suggest and schedule local jv games. Everyone's pretty much in the same boat so I have to assume a school should not have a problem scheduling local jv teams if its the problem that you think it will be.

Not that it has anything to do with this issue, but I wasnt aware of any JV games on Saturday mornings. In EKY most JV games are Monday evenings.

I would not be surprised to see JV teams play a local schedule. Instead of CCH heading to Bourbon County on a Saturday morning, I can see them playing HHS or Dixie a few times each season for JV. That would make more sense.

In N.Ky most of them are played on Saturday mornings.

Ashland and the other teams in the region play on Monday nights. If there was ever a game on Saturday, it was only once maybe.

There seems to be a big problem with cost for the varsity trips. Thats a big part of the opposition to 6 classes in this forum. I was simply pointing out that the JV trips will double these costs. Our players stay at school on Fri. (3-10-11?) Be at school Sat 7Am, returning around 2-3pm? I'm guesstimating here, but that equates to around 16 hours in a 24 hour period for the players that play JV. I,d say Mon nights JV games might alleviate that. But then you would have a few players that play in both games that would miss Mon. varsity practice to prepare for the next fri night game. Is all of this a big problem? I would think for some programs it may be. Guess we're going to find out.

Don't forget the cost of transportation that all sports are facing. The cost of gas, in our district it was discussed at $1.00 per mile, AND the cost of paying the bus driver makes a lot of trips not a reasonable costs especially when you consider the JV/frosh level of ANY sport.

Not really double the costs because the varsity takes two busses and the jv one. So we'll add about 1/2 the additional cost. Time is admittedly a factor no doubt. But most jv players don't play much varsity ball (some play limited or special teams only). And don't you think that at most we're talking about an additional hour of travel each way (for total of 2 hours per game times two away trips per year or a total of 4 hours during the season) makes the time issue really seem a small one in the grand scheme of things? Admittedly, those schools that can't afford the trips will have the option of not scheduling the two longer jv games per year. I guess I just don't see the big problem with the issue, but perhaps I'm missing something.

I am going to guess that we will see the NKY schools schedule each other, than play their district foes in JV. You must drive awful fast to get to some of these places in an hour:D

Wait....I might see the logic here....Will Highlands be in Russell's District??

Just a question
