Tom Mitchell has refereed several HS games on the girls side of the agenda including many of my games.

Now that you mentioned it, I just remembered he has officated a few girls games.

What do you mean same demeanor? Goins and Taylor are good. Chamberlain has seen better days

I have to disagree with the Joe Thompson quote. There are many things that go into being a good official and he lacked a couple of them, one being court awareness (clock starting/stopping on time ect).

 

The problems that stem between coaches and officials are that too many officials don't know how to really officiate a game, then when an official that does shows up, that official looks inept. In other words, there are alot more bads ones than good ones! Most of the good ones have moved up (college) or out because it is so difficult to overcome politics in some associations!

Someone who doesnt quite have the experience that the top officials in his association may have or that doesnt put in the effort they do over the long haul. A younger person who is trained to expect immediate reward and isnt patient enough to actually earn the schedule they THINK they deserve.

Joe Thompson as well as Chamberlain, Goins and Taylor also understood the flow of the game. You can talk about time stoppage etc but I'll take a ref that understands when to make a call and how many calls to make. Most refs think that people in the stands came to see them blow the whistle. The above mentioned guys knew/know that they need to blend into the game.

Bottom line is that when Joe Thompson was still reffing he was one of the VERY best and was a class-act and had integrity. John Taylor, John Chamberlain, and Cary Lyle are the same way and that is why they are three of the VERY best the Bluegrass Basketball Association or in my humble opinion the entire state has to offer.

 

I am sure politics can play a part in association rankings and district/regional/state assignments, but the 4 guys mentioned above are where they are or have gotten to the point they are b/c they are simply, GOOD!!!

Never said he was not a "class act"! Just not as "god-like" as some played him out to be.
