Before I go on I know Coach Stellman likes to make cute quotes in the paper but this one is over the line. First of all, I would think Coach Stellman would want Conner in the finals instead of some private school. Next, I wonder what he supposes doesn't make a difference??? Maybe Coach Stellman (and a lot of other coaches for that matter) need to look at the success public schools have had in other states.

 

Funny thing about Conner is when Bob Lewis jumped from OH to KY to coach the Cougars they went from an average team to a title contender (state champ one year and state runner up another year) and once Coach Lewis left Conner the Cougars went right back to average.

Coach Stellman has long been a great quote source (just call his school answering machine). I;d like to think that this is nothing more than exasperation by a coach who is at the 17th largest school in the state who knows that no matter what system is adopted, he must have to go through the two large parochial powers for a title. But if he looks down the road, as he has, he knows that the pairings alternations announced in May mean that in most years, he won't see the same one of those two schools, and certainly not both as has been the case in the past.

Guru, I think you are correct, but it will reduce the Boone County High Schools for a short time only . The growth in our County is something that many of us who have lived in the county for more than thirty years, still find hard to believe. It won't take all that many years and the High Schools will be right back where they are today.... All you have to is visit the grade schools in Boone to see what the high school will look like, in just a couple of short years.....

It doesn't take a genius to see what Coach Tom is talking about . . . .(which is 100% in line with most of your points about 6 classes AND the public/private debate.

 

What I don't understand here is--if the NKY coaches were 18-0 AGAINST 6 classes--why are you missing the point that Coach Tom is making?

 

For those who can't figure it out--I will clue you in--

 

It appears to me (and I have a feeling that I know him well enough to understand)--that Coach Tom is pointing to what he thinks this deal is REALLY about--and it isn't six classes. I would venture to say that Coach Tom is saying that the best teams are the best teams--and it doesn't matter if you water things down by having 6 classes. The best teams are the best teams--AND for him--PUBLIC/PRIVATE has nothing to do with it. (Again--you may want to talk to him before you "ASSUME" what this quote means).

 

The problem here is--some people are a little too mixed up over what you would term to be "cute" quips in the newspaper. But if you would put a little thought into things--you would see that he is addressing the issues in his own special way.

 

And before anyone else goes half cocked about what he really means--keep in mind--Tom Stellman went to a private, catholic high school. His entire family--and Tom himself--worked EXTREMELY HARD to get that opportunity.

 

But--I guess we live in a time where it is a lot easier to read something in the paper--and skim over it--and think "another cute quip from Tom . . . .ha, ha, ha!" without taking 3 seconds to get past the normal thought process.

 

 

Anyone who actually KNOWS Tom Stellman doesn't ever question the fact that the works his posterior off--trying to win a state championship. If he is guilty of anything--it is taking TOO MUCH OF THAT LOAD ON HIMSELF!

Correct, which makes the 2011 project lots of fun for those KHSAA folks to look forward to. New school in Boone. Likely new school in Oldham. Possible new school in Hardin. Maybe Harlan Central will actually be open by then.

I am a little surprised at the direction that people are going with this. Sometimes--I get the impression that Coach Tom is setting a few of you up--simply for his enjoyment (because it is pretty obvious that perception is definitely NOT reality if you actually talk to the man to see what he meant with his comments). But--I got a laugh out of the reaction. Ha, ha, ha!
