Does Kentucky Have An All-Time Sacks Leader?

Featured Replies

Do not see it as a stat that has been counted or in the official record books, but Belfry's Rayquan Horton has to be making a push for it if it exists.

Through his Junior season Horton has already accumulated 39 career sacks.

Chances are strong he will finish with 50+ career sacks and well over 100+ Career TFL's.

That's the first name I thought about.

I don't remember for sure but it seems like he played in 8th grade.

Sorry, meant 3rd grade.

I don't know the official numbers but I remember Bryant Pirtle (DeSales - 2015) had a ridiculous amount in his Junior and Senior seasons. I believe he was the state leader the past two years and may have been recognized as the record holder for a one season total (in his Junior year). Just not sure where to find the official totals.

Committed to the Hilltoppers last year but on his way to East Mississippi CC next season.

It's been a long time, but the best I can remember Kurt Barber, All-American at both WR and LB, averaged something like close to 4 per game during his junior and senior years.

I will see if I can find something official.

WOW! That is craziness!

Dennis Johnson brings back good memories and that stat would not surprise me. He played I think 5 years and was the epitome of being a man among boys.

I remember Barber. He was a beast. They called Paducah Tilghman, "Linebacker U".

I have not been able to find out anything tonight on Barber but I will soon. But I am pretty sure about that number.

"Linebacker U" was pretty appropriate, because Barber played alongside Joe Phil who was also a All-American. How many schools have had 2 All-Americans playing at the same time?

Barber was an absolute beast, and when he decided to go into the backfield, he went-

I have never seen a more universal athlete than Barber, he could pretty much do whatever he wanted on offense or defense.

According to this document I found online, Dennis Johnson had 76 sacks.

An unbelievable talent but I dont buy some of the stuff on his accomplishments list. I just dont believe he was 1st Team All State 10 times. This (to me) implies he made first team All State as a 3rd grader and every year thereafter. Its also hard to win the region in basketball in 1997 and be runner-up in the region in basketball in 1997.

The statement also states he first got into a varsity game as a 2nd grader. Is this not a violation of the NFHS rules on safety (have the rules changed since then).

He made all state on offense and defense a few times, which probably makes that 10 number attainable.

Yes the rules have changed since then. He was always said to have played as a primary schooler. (I always heard 3rd grade)

Must be a typo on the two 1997 teams. Maybe a Harrodsburg person can answer that one.

According to his Wiki page (which is always correct :lol2:)

Dennis Johnson grew up in Kentucky, where the local high school had very low enrollment. Due to Harrodsburg High School's small size, Johnson was allowed to suit up with the high school varsity team as a second grader. He already stood 5'7" and weighed 170 pounds. His brother, a third grader, was also on the team. The brothers rarely got into a game, but they created enough attention that the state changed the eligibility rules for low-enrollment schools. The brothers had to wait until the seventh grade to play varsity football again. When he returned to the team at age 11, he earned honorable mention all-state honors as a defensive end. Johnson ended his high school career with seven seasons of play and six varsity letters.[1] He was selected as the Sports Illustrated National Player of the Year and the National Defensive Player of the Year by USA Today and The Sporting News.[2]

A pretty cool article right before he went pro: ESPN.com - Johnson's journey to NFL has been long

Yeah, his dad was the coach so he started them a little early. :lol2:
